Love is Blind Japan

Is anyone else planning to watch this? The first few episodes are out on Netflix today. The last Love is Blind was absolutely cringeworthy nonsense so I can’t wait for it to be back Grin

Japanese reality shows don’t tend to have quite as much drama (although they don’t have zero!) so I’m really interested to see if this is dramatic and cringey or quite laid back and sensible.

Anyone else fancy watching along?

Never seen the 'regular' version, but chanced this and binged the first 5.

Ryotaro seems like a sweet guy. I felt really sorry for him when his partner dissed his looks in front of the presenters. He's not remotely scary looking, but I do appreciate that there are different cultural standards.

I agree with Priya over the wine incident; a bit unnecessary and pretentious on his part.

Felt a bit sorry for those couples who didn't get to go to Okinawa, that resort looks lush!

Kiehi · 16/02/2022 12:36

Just watched the latest releases and so sad that there were so many break-ups.

BewareTheLibrarians · 16/02/2022 20:05

Oh yay, people! Smile

Ryotaro is my absolute favourite. He reminds me so much of dh (also Japanese) in his calmness and way of speaking and attitudes. Ryotaro’s style is unconventional-ish in Japan, traditionally bleach blond hair and his style of clothes would be seen as a bit of a delinquent, but his personality is absolutely not that at all. He seems like a great guy.

I think you’ll enjoy the next episodes with Priya and her realisations about Misaki. Wink

The break ups are so sad but probably necessary. Still no idea what happened to Odacchi in Okinawa. The other couple that broke up later was a weird one - seemed like one person’s priorities changed, or they weren’t exactly truthful in the pod.

I really think the apartments aren’t helping either. They’re so sparse, with no decoration or nice furnishings (possibly Midori and Wataru’s one was quite stylish, but Mori and Minami’s apartment looked so soul destroying. Especially the curtains by the dining table, they somehow annoyed me in every scene.

I’m only really confident of one couple making it down the aisle, which is a bit sad!

"I think you’ll enjoy the next episodes with Priya and her realisations about Misaki."

Oh yes! Watched up to ep. 7 yesterday and I laughed out loud at Priya trying to unravel Misaki's business model. Particularly the part where he started off saying he didn't need to live a luxurious lifestyle, 'just' 2 million yen (£12,740ish) a month and jetting between Australia and Japan on a weekly basis. Grin

I was so confused by the scenes between Mori and Minami. I just assumed a lot of what Mori was complaining about happened off camera, either that or the subtitles are failing me (my Japanese is crap, I can only order things from restaurants, apologise and say when my birthday is).

I thought I was warming to Midori, as she seemed quite thoughtful in Okinawa. How she body shamed him later in the gym wasn't on though!

QuibbleTribble · 16/02/2022 20:45

Jambo!

Turns out I got confused between Mizuki and Misaki! Blush

BewareTheLibrarians · 16/02/2022 21:09

Oh wait I meant Mizuki!! Priya’s fiancé Blush Her face was classic at the 2 million yen - pure “that’s not luxury at all!” confusion!

The latest episode where the truth came out about his business, the second hand cringe was almost unbearable. Priya’s expressions were great.

I think the problem with Mori and Minami was that she is very direct, and usually people in Japan (to wildly generalise!), especially early in a relationship, would be gentler in the way they say things, and he’s quite traditional and found that hard to deal with. He would prefer “it’s no big problem but I’ve noticed there’s a lot of hair in the sink, do you think you could help me out with that sometimes? No worries if not!” and she’s like “pick up your hair!”

There’s also some confusion about the “dream” she wouldn’t support him with. He mentioned wanting to fund treatment in developing countries so it might have been that, but some people on the Reddit Love is Blind Japan thread theorised from his fashion and instagram that his dream was something a bit more out-there. Mysterious!

I feel that Mori wanted a more traditional partner. I completely understand why Minami wanted to keep working, but it seemed like Mori was not supportive.

Priya was giving Mizuki such a hard time. He came across differently in the pods and Priya was not impressed.

I feel sad for Shuntaro though. Ayano seems a bit fake to me and not really interested, but it could be her personality. I can’t decide.

BewareTheLibrarians · 20/02/2022 18:38

Mori was an odd one wasn’t he? In the pods, he seemed to like her independence and that she wanted to keep working, but he then didn’t seem to like it at all in real life.

I think Shuntaro nailed it with Ayano when he said “she’s here as a tourist, not as a partner.” and I thought that summed it up quite well. For whatever reason, she didn’t open up to him at all and everything seemed quite superficial on her side, and I don’t think he knew how to get through that. She may just have not been feeling it with him? The age difference was pretty big.

What are your predictions for the last 2 episodes?

Married - Ryotaro and Motomi, Wataru and Midori

Not married - Shuntaro and Ayano, Priya and Mizuki, Kaoru and Misaki

BewareTheLibrarians · 25/02/2022 17:52

@Kiehi I’m just about to watch episode 10 and completely agree with your predictions Smile

Ryotaro and Motomi look really strong so far. (And Ryotaro looks so good with dark hair!) Wataru and Midori, I don’t think she’s there yet but I’ll think she’ll say yes at the end despite that, as long as he survives the gym sessions!

The other 3 seem like definite “no”s. Unless Priya decides she wants to be the breadwinner with a trophy husband, which is pretty unlikely. Kaoru doesn’t seem to like anything about Misaki. With Shuntaro and Ayako, I feel like one of them will say no, but no idea which one.

I’ll probably come back in an hour to find I’ve been wrong about everything!

I know this thread is old but only just watching this series after watching the UK version recently!

Really enjoying it and up to episode 7. Love that the ladies are all so naturally beautiful, with no fillers or plastic surgery in sight!

The apartments they are living in all seem very grim though - are they typical of Japanese apartments? Can't imagine they support a positive relationship!

I'm annoyed about the age gap for Ayano & Shuntaro - did she know how old he was in the pods? Fair enough if she did, but otherwise putting a beautiful young woman with a man more than old enough to be her dad seems very unfair! (Plus wouldn't happen if the sexes were reversed!)

I don't think any of the couples seem particularly compatible so will be surprised if any marry or if they do, if they stay together!
