Bamber Gascoigne has died, aged 87. Sad news for University Challenge fans. He was a brilliant quizmaster on that show all through my early life. A long life well lived, but I'm still sad to hear of his passing.

Being a shallow person, though, my eye was caught by the mention in the BBC news item that he inherited West Horsley Place which is Button House in Ghosts! Shock I don't know if he ever lived there. Gorgeous house and grounds. I wonder what he made of Ghosts.

I bet he loved it. Ghosts shows off his home beautifully.
He always came across as a gentleman.

One thing the article didn’t mention was he went with kit Williams the night he buried the masquerade hare for anyone who remembers the treasure hunt of the 70’s

Oh yes! I'd forgotten about that. Beautiful illustrations.

When the voiceover introduces the programme "asking the questions,.." I still say Bamber Gascoigne in my head as he'll always be associated with UC to me.

RIP Bamber.

Ding dong and RIP, Bamber Gascoigne.

So do DH and I. Although we say it out loud.

Button House has an Opera House in its gardens!

Thank you for drawing my attention to this article, OP. Some lovely things being said about Bamber Gascoigne, which confirm the sort of person he seemed to be on TV.

He's 'Sale of the Century' on a Sunday teatime to me.
Showing my age now.

That was Nicholas Parsons.

I met him once as a young pianist. He was LOVELY.

cptartapp · 08/02/2022 17:04

BlushBlushso it was!

I knew he owned 'Button House'. Like Alison in the programme he didn't know he was going to inherit it.

CailleachGranda · 08/02/2022 17:18

Yea he inherited it from a 99 year old aunt

Part of the inspiration for ghosts was his story

Campervan69 · 08/02/2022 17:52

Wow that's fascinating. I love Ghosts. What a beautiful place to inherit.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/02/2022 18:44

Sadly, I know enough about my family tree and my husband's to be 99.99999% sure we have no chance of inheriting a stately home out of the blue. Sad

I hope he wasn't offended by Griff Rhys Jones' portrayal of him in The Young Ones or Mark Gattiss' in Starter for Ten. He sounds like a good sport. It's really quite an honour to be such a national icon that your name gets taken in vain like that!

RIP Bamber.

I don't think he'd have been offended by the spoof, Gasp0de.
