Sweet Magnolias [contains season 2 spoilers]

Just discovered this today and I've watched 5 episodes! It's very sickly sweet and southern with people named Dana Sue and Skeeter 🤣 but it's easy watching and I'm hooked! Anyone else?

I've got a couple of observations:

The ex husband has one look: wounded. How he gets acting jobs I do not know.

Trotter. What kind of a name is that? Parents need to get on AIBU and have their arses handed to them.

I really dislike the way Dana Sue is styled. The heavy makeup and very dark hair do her no favours.

I object to the whole 'people call us the sweet magnolias' thing. Why? Are magnolias sweet? Is it a rip off from steel magnolias?

Saying all that, I expect I will watch the next series! 😆

Things I like:
The large cocktail glasses and pitchers.
Some outfits, eg Helen’s workwear.
Friendship and romance themes.
The small town vibe.
The teens are naice.
Most of the men are ‘gentlemanly’ and they talk about mental health matters.

Dislike:
Earnest and dull characters and plots, especially Cal and Maddie.
Mean girls story with the local politics.

Don’t mind about young DC not being parented, that’s just TV world. Like PPs, feel sorry for the put-upon yoga teacher: perhaps he’s providing childcare too.l!

Agree: Sweet Magnolias is a Steel Magnolias rip off title. And Steel Magnolias was SO much better!

Chris Klein was walking in the scene with Peggy when she was telling him they had a son and I actually thought he'd forgotten how to walk or needed a shit

So funny about Trotter, because it's so random I actually assumed it was a nickname BlushGrin

I have just started watching series 2 - series 1 so much better

I find Cal & Maddy like a wet dishcloth but her ex husband is very wet

Love the houses and sone of the clothes

No idea why Dana Sue has such harsh make up ?

Also bill is treated like the devil including for Isaac which was not his fault (and I actually think he handled it really well) yet Ronnie is forgiven? And Dana sue messing around 2 men is funny?

Glad I found this thread. I cannot stand Dana's character. She acts like the big I am with her daughter and it is awful to watch. There's no mother/daughter closeness, just an oddly detached authoritative relationship? Struggling to get through the long and ponderous monologues they sprout. Like... these women are in the 40s but look..... not in their forties. I couldn't be friends with them, they're all so fecking wet.

@Fritilleries they're not even early 40s! They went to school with Peggy who had Isaac at 16 and he's now 22 so they're supposed to be 38!! I can maybe just get on board with that for Maddie but no way for Helen and Dana Sue! The women that play them are both 47. That's why I couldn't get past the fertility storyline with Helen!

Real sexist differences in how Maddy treats her boys vs Dana Sue micromanaging her daughter (although she was worse in season 1).

Oh, another annoying thing, Maddy was a SAHM but upon divorce got to keep the massive, gorgeous house and had spare money to invest in an expensive refurb/property for their business.

Not credible (except Maddy) if they’re meant to be late 30s! The other two look great (dodgy make up aside) at their actual age.

Perhaps Peggy was at the same school but a few years younger than them!

Maddy also seems to have no idea what’s going in in her boys’ life and surely knowing them she’d be guessing at what the big issue was?

I guess as she was sahm and dedicated herself to her kids (and bill was the cheat) it seems fair she got the house. I think this was even discussed season 1?

I get the impression she does most of the stuff with the spa whilst the other two pop in and help when they can.

I’ve finished season 2. I really enjoy it as easy watching - agree with the others that they seem to really be upping the religious elements in season 2.

I really thought Trent (mayor) was going to be Isaac’s father.

I haven’t read the books but assume Maddie has 3 kids so they recreated it for the show - they really shouldn’t have bothered there is literally no point to having Katie in the storyline.

Also, totally agree on Dana-Sue’s make up - waaaay too much. She’s meant to be in a professional kitchen - hair would be tied back and most of that make up would be steamed/sweated off her face in minutes.

I’ll definitely watch season 3 (if there is one) but in a happy to let it bumble on in the background.
