Father Brown: what do we think?

It's been going quite a while but I've only watched a couple of series - and I'm torn.

On one hand, the costumes, hair, makeup, location, cars, filming etc are gorgeous.

But so often the writing, directing and acting ... aren't.

I've decided though that it's all happening in a parallel universe that never was.

And I LOVE IT. It's daily appointment TV.

I love it as escapist fluff. It isn't at all realistic, of course. Alternate universe is a good way to look at it.

FriteFuaite · 21/01/2022 00:43

Oh the clothes 😍 Bunty is just fabulous, isn't she!! And I love Sorcha Cusack. I think I've seen all the episodes, sadly, unless there's a new series I was unaware of?! crosses fingers Grin

Seasidemumma77 · 21/01/2022 00:44

I'm addicted. I want Bunty's figure, wardrobe and couldn't give a toss attitude.

Thoosa · 21/01/2022 00:44

EXH loves it. He comes round to mine and then binges it on my Brit box subscription. Normally when we are supposed to be doing something important. He compares it to Heartbeat. I said it was basically the same target audience as Doctors and was very unpopular.

I don’t know if I’m being worn down, but it’s growing on me. A tiny bit. I’ve always liked whatisname, the lead actor.

iklboo · 21/01/2022 01:07

@FriteFuaite - a new series of 10 episodes started earlier this month (unless you mean you've seen those as well).

It's great. DS(16) comes out of his pit bedroom to voluntarily watch it with me! I love Inspector Mallory (his wife is called Valerie). He's wonderfully inept.

Iwantacampervan · 21/01/2022 15:06

I love it as escapism in the afternoon - it always seems to be sunny in Kembleford and I rather fancy trying the (award winning) strawberry scones.

torquewench · 21/01/2022 15:08

I LOVE it. And also Agatha Raisin. I binged her whilst furloughed.

TooBigForMyBoots · 21/01/2022 15:10

I love it. And so does DS(14). Its one of the few things we watch together.Grin

CailleachGranda · 21/01/2022 15:11

We love it

I thought the acting was fine. - except for one episode that was about a ballroom dancing competition and Bunty's love interest was a blind dancer. His acting was absolutely the worst I've ever had the misfortune to see.

TooBigForMyBoots · 21/01/2022 15:12

I have a crush on Flambeau.Blush

alexdgr8 · 21/01/2022 15:12

i like it too. the lead actor gives a very finely nuanced performance.
i hadn't actually realised that it was set in the past until my cousin said something.

she was astonished that i had not noticed.
i said i just thought they were well dressed country people who like classic cars.

Hand's off!

He's mine! Grin

Her dresses are gorgeous
iklboo · 21/01/2022 17:48

DS has quite the Bunty crush. He didn't know where to look when she did her burlesque audition.

SantaClawsServiette · 22/01/2022 02:45

I used to watch this when I wanted something light. I actually like Chesterton's stories, which these don't resemble at all, but they were nice things in themselves.

I kind of lost the ability to believe FB was actually a Catholic priest in the mid-20th century, somewhere in about series 7 or 8, and it made me a little mad. So I haven't tried 9 yet and I'm not sure if I will. Surely it's possible to be light without treating viewers like idiots?

SantaClawsServiette · 22/01/2022 02:47

I do like Bunty's outfits though!

SocialConnection · 22/01/2022 11:11

Oooh Flambeau. 💞

And yes, it does have a very similar feel to Agatha Raisin, which we also bookmark to watch.

Awful. I have up on the first series. He's playing the role of an Anglican vicar, not a Catholic priest. And his very old parish church is just wrong!

TooBigForMyBoots · 22/01/2022 22:48

Have you not met the vicar yet @Toddlerteaplease?

SantaClawsServiette · 23/01/2022 00:22

Ha, I always notice that too, but I am willing to accept it for aesthetic reasons. Perhaps there were two CofE parishes in the village and one went tits up and the Catholics bought the church?

But yes, Anglican, and from 2020. And I don't see why, there is no reason the story wouldn't work with a plausible kind Catholic priest. Maybe like the one in the books who is very likable.

mathanxiety · 23/01/2022 00:27

I love it for all the reasons outlined.

My DCs shake their heads sadly.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/01/2022 02:02

@SantaClawsServiette ha ha, possibly, my friend was parish priest of an ex Anglican Church that was sold to the Catholic Church.

CarrieBlue · 23/01/2022 07:17

Given the budget must be tiny, I think it’s really good. The unrealistic catholic parish annoys but since Catholicism is central to the original stories I kind of accept it. Very glad Sid was back for last series Wink Blush

BringMeTea · 23/01/2022 15:17

I love it. So comforting. Yes, could do with a slightly more RC slant but a delightful ensemble,

Newestname002 · 23/01/2022 17:58

I find life very stressful so find this very undemanding series an easy watch which gives me a break from real life for a while. I still prefer The Repair Shop though. 🌹
