does anyone else think Tom and Jerry can be a bit violent at times?

my 5 yo loves it but I sit and watch it with her and cant believe how violent it can be. I have to say though that I used to watch it as a kid and it hasnt affected me in any way.

Do you let your kids watch it?

Yes and he enjoys it, he knows it is not real life.

My ds2 loves it, he's 4.
All cartoons are violent up to a point but the thing is that they always get up again afterwards and go back to normal, so it ends up being funny rather than disturbing.
I'm not too keen on my dc watching the Simpsons (although they do whenever they get the chance), there are some hideously violent scenes on "Itchy and Scratchy" with blood and everything which I think is too much for children.

they are in a way - but it is so unrealistic that it is difficult to see how anyone could be adversely affected by it. There is also a lot of supposed violence in those old weekly comics - the bash street kids, minnie the minx etc.All of which I loved!

I used to watch it as a kid too - and it has scarred me for life... Every time I use a cheese grater, I remember the bit where Tom was flying through the air & landed on one..well, sort of skidded across it on his bum [wince]
It was the sound effect rather than the visual image, I think.....

Mine love it too and it is a bit violent compared to Cbeebies! I think Cbeebies seems a bit tame to DS2 now (he is 4) and he isn't so keen on it as his brother used to be at the same age which is a shame as it is a lot safer, imo.

I used to love it too as a child but then we only watched once a week at most and now they can see it all day so limits need to be set, I think.

Ginnedupudding, the Simpsons is supposed to be a show for adults, Itchy and Scratchy is meant to be a parody of the Tom & Jerry genre. My ds's (6 and 9) do watch the Simpsons as its one of my favourite shows but many of the jokes apart from the really obvious ones relating to bodily functions go right over their heads.

I watched loads as a child.

Amazingly I have never felt the need to hit anyone in the face with a frying pan to see if their head takes its shape.

Neither have I ever felt the need to frequent bowling alleys, or play the piano on the concert stage.

My cleaner doesn't affect a Southern US accent or wear droopy tights.

My skirting boards are clear ov perfectly shaped mouse holes.

I've never cooked a turkey for thanksgiving and see it eaten to the bones within seconds

my son would be bored by tom and jerry now. even roadrunner doesn't hold his attention for that long.

max and ruby seem to hypnotise him though. which is more worrying

Sophy - I know its meant to be for adults but its a cartoon and is on at 6.00 in the evening so kids will inevitably watch it.
I don't ban it as mine do like it and it doesn't seem to bother them, but sometimes the Itchy and Scratchy parts make me wince and I think "should they really be watching this stuff?".
I do realise its a parody of Tom and Jerry but a bit near the mark at times.
Saying that my eldest son loves Ugly Betty (he watches it at his Nan's) and some of the stuff on there is really unsuitable for him, but it just goes over his head.

Yes, I let DS watch it. He's 6. He knows it's not real - I'm more worried by the Transformers DVD he's just got for Christmas

Yes, I'd let any child of any age watch it, it's a cartoon and quite funny.
