Anyone watched the new series, the treatment from the police to the families was utterly appalling.

Shocking wasn't it. Stephen merchant played his part well though a tough roll to play.

NinaDefoe · 07/01/2022 23:58

Watched all of it the other day.
I couldn’t believe it when the captions at the end said that nothing had been done regarding the indifference and incompetence shown by the investigating team.
Some of them have since been promoted too. I felt so angry watching it.
The family liaison officer was the absolute worst. What a nasty man.

Bananarama21 · 08/01/2022 00:01

That family liason office just wasn't bothered didn't make the effort to speak to Sarah in person, was rude on the phone and dismissive even st the every end when he said the case was being taken other he still got Anthony's name wrong after she lambasted him the last time. The other team was so kind caring and compassionate the other liason office gave her his personal mobile.

I hope the family liaison officer watches it and recognises themselves. I hope their family and colleagues see it too.
They should feel ashamed. I don’t think anyone could be worse at their job.

Rhannion · 08/01/2022 00:30

There is another thread about this which is worth reading. What an appalling way to treat those families and their loved ones.

LadyNell · 08/01/2022 01:02

An absolute disgrace from start to finish, total incompetence The Met ....what a joke

LadyNell · 08/01/2022 01:07

MrsLargeEmbodied · 08/01/2022 08:20

There is a documentary on BBC IPlayer about the case:

www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p04s38l8/how-police-missed-the-grindr-killer

NinaDefoe · 08/01/2022 14:09

Worth watching too.

Rhannion I couldn't find one could you link it please?
Sorry I don’t know how to link on here but it’s under in Telly Addicts as Four Lives.

I've just got round to watching this. I've got a sneaking suspicion that the police were protecting someone by not investigating Port too closely. Their incompetence was staggering.

I also found it very moving because the victim characters reminded me of people I used to know, and one in particular was too similar to a friend of my DD's. She's lost touch with him after he went to Austria to be an au pair a few years ago. I found him incredibly irritating at the time but I can see now that he was very, very vulnerable. I'm sort of glad he was at our house with DD so much instead of latching on to older men who didn't have his best interests at heart.

TVTestCard · 10/01/2022 00:00

TheSmallClanger do you mean protecting someone in the police?

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 10/01/2022 16:19

Maybe. Could also be a local big-time dealer or big name in the "scene" paying them off.

A lot is made of the role of institutional racism in the Met with Stephen Lawrence, which was an absolute gift to them as it meant that they could downplay the straightforward corruption involved. Clifford Norris, father of murderer David Norris, was paying certain cops to protect his son and friends, among others.

Port's dealer was also convicted later of murdering a man by poisoning him with GHB.

Simonjt · 10/01/2022 16:51

I finally watched it all today, I enjoyed it, well, it was well written etc, I guess enjoy is the wrong word.

We do need to keep highlighting the fact that minorities are denied justice (I know non-minorities are as well, but not at the same rate), we had Stephen Lawrence, we’ve had Ports victims, we’ve had black womens bodies photographed and shared on whatsapp, we have minorities subjected to illegal stop and search. Until rich white men do anything our justice system will never change.

Fuckitydoodah · 10/01/2022 21:43

Fucking hell the incompetence and indifference of the police is mind blowing. It's like they couldn't be bothered to investigate even if they did realise there must of been a link. Very much a 'if you're gay, sleep around and use drugs what do you expect to happen' attitude.

TVTestCard · 10/01/2022 23:17

Thanks Clanger I didn’t know that about the Norrises.

userxx · 10/01/2022 23:27

Shameful. Makes you wonder how many more murders have been passed off as accidental deaths.
