The Wire - worth persevering with?

Yes, I know I'm slightly behind the curve, but I just can't get into it. We've watched the first 5 or 6 episodes and I struggle to keep understand what half of them are saying and I just haven't found the plot that riveting. I loved The Sopranos and Breaking Bad from the first episodes, so maybe The Wire just isn't my thing? Anyone else a bit underwhelmed to start with but learned to love it?

I'd say you've given it a fair go watching 6 episodes and still not finding yourself interested so give up on it. I loved it, but there's a reason we have hundreds of TV channels available to us.

CuteOrangeElephant · 03/01/2022 21:58

Yes!!! For me it only started to click in the last three episodes and then it was amazing.

Saralyn · 03/01/2022 21:59

Switch on the subtiles. It’s quit hard to understand without

noblegiraffe · 03/01/2022 22:01

Yes, you need to put the subtitles on. It's one of the best pieces of television ever.

scaredsadandstuck · 03/01/2022 22:01

10p% stick with it!!! Put the subtitles on till you get used to dialect.

I'm actually jealous you've not seen it yet!!

WhatsitWiggle · 03/01/2022 22:03

I loved it, but agree the dialogue takes a bit of getting used to - we did a lot of rewinding!

JustJam4Tea · 03/01/2022 22:03

It really is amazing tv. But we needed subtitles for the first few episodes and I didn’t really get into it till about episode 5 or 6.

Possibly I loved it because it was new, maybe more stuff like that has been made so it’s not as amazing.

But give it longer I think.

LondonWolf · 03/01/2022 22:03

It’s ok. I never thought it lived up to the hype tbh. Season 4 was the one that came pretty close though.

It’s no The Sopranos that’s for sure.

Siuan · 03/01/2022 22:03

I tried and gave up but that was before subtitles were available. Might give it another go

BillyBarryBoo · 03/01/2022 22:04

Yes it's brilliant!

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 03/01/2022 22:07

Subtitles even more necessary for series 2

WarmForDecember · 03/01/2022 22:09

We were the same. It was far too much effort to understand what they were saying and what was going on so we gave up. We could try it again. We loved Breaking Bad etc.

LtGreggs · 03/01/2022 22:10

It's one of the best things I've ever watched. I'm even named after it.

ParkingDiagram · 03/01/2022 22:13

What? Are you an English speaker? If so, I’m not sure how it’s hard to understand.

We watched it all in lockdown last year (without subtitles). I thought it was excellent and a worthwhile watch.

iklboo · 03/01/2022 22:14

OMAR'S COMING! OMAR'S COMING!

Ohmycron · 03/01/2022 22:15

In essence, I did and I’m not sure really if I would’ve done again. It’s okay but I don’t get why people rave about it so much I preferred madmen

Ohmycron · 03/01/2022 22:15

I also had to have subtitles on the whole time

in2dagroove · 03/01/2022 22:36

I found it so moving really, following the lives of the boys from their school days, the Choices that were open to them, Hobson's choices!! it used to make me weep to think of the hopelessness of their situations. Also the politics was fascinating for me due to my career, seeing how the strategic decisions made for career enhancing reasons were played out on the streets. You were able to really see this clearly which I found fascinating

OnTheBoardwalk · 03/01/2022 22:45

Keep going with it if you can is a fantastic show although I only really appreciated it the second time round of watching and really understanding what’s going on

That’s really where it all started fitting together and understanding the bigger picture. Whole episodes I hated started making sense and good viewing. season 2 I’m looking at you!

LockdownLisa · 03/01/2022 22:49

I'd watch it with subtitles, but DH hates them! I just struggle to understand the very strong Baltimore accents. I think I'll give it to the end of the series and if I'm not sold on by then, move in to something else.

Thanks for everybody's opinions.

I used to read a synopsis of the episode afterwards as I often couldn’t understand what people were saying (or watched with subtitles) but I did think it was fantastic.

coconuthead · 03/01/2022 23:02

I loved The Sopranos and BB but I couldn't get into The Wire at all. I might try again some time because everyone I know loved it but I just couldn't get into it myself.

PollyPaintsFlowers · 03/01/2022 23:06

I loved The Wire, enjoyed Breaking Bad but just couldn't get in to The Sopranos despite two or three attempts. If it's not gripping you move on, it's only a TV show, there's plenty more out there. Have you given Homeland a go?

PocahontasMcGinty · 03/01/2022 23:09

Exact same for me. Kept at it because I had heard good things, series 4 was great, the rest was meh....

Not a patch on The Sopranos

Lou2284 · 03/01/2022 23:16

One of the best TV shows written. I've watched it twice, probably will watch it again
