Anyone watched "The Medici"?

Loved it, not least thanks to the incredibly handsome cast!

Both Cosimo de Medici (Season 1) and Lorenzo de Medici (Seasons 2-3) were insanely handsome (very much unlike their real-life counterparts Grin ) but the relationship between Cosimo and Contessina was the absolute highlight of the show for me

I watched most of the first series a few years ago but gave up as didn't feel like it was going anywhere and there weren't any further series available at the time so wondered if it had been cancelled. Totally agree on very attractive cast. May need to give it another go...Is it complete now and where are you watching it? Netflix?

Me! I loved series 1 & 2 but agree it trailed off. Wonderful sets, clothes and gorgeous actors. But Dustin Hoffman's accent New York accent jarred a bit!

diddl · 21/12/2021 08:12

I haven't seen it.

Is it more style over substance?

When are you putting up pics of someone "insanely handsome"??

I second this

Well it's not a wholly historically accurate - some characters have been merged and timelines distorted. But they have broadly stuck with the gentrification of the Medicis.

And it was made in conjunction with Italian authorities so they have access to buildings and sites which most productions wouldn't have. That alone made it worth watching for me.

It gives a good flavour of Florence and the jostling between the different families and states.

Seasons 1-3 are all on Netflix. It's of course not historically accurate and lots of plots are simply made up, but definitely a beautiful flavour of Florence and the general feel of what the Medici stood for. It's a bit like The Godfather at times Grin

Some more pictures of the cast for @diddl 😍

Nope-maybe the characters they play make them attractive?

XelaM · 21/12/2021 12:37

@diddl You're hard to please! Grin but yes their characters definitely add to the attraction

I loved it - agree not accurate but I thought that it did capture the essence of the period and not many productions manage that these days.

I'd love them to roll forward a bit and do Catherine de Medici in a similar vein rather than just a pantomime dame.

XelaM · 22/12/2021 17:42

Oh, I would love a proper series on Catherine de Medici instead the fiction they made up in "Reign" (although I still loved Catherine in "Reign" Grin but it didn't really have anything to do with the real Catherine de Medici. For one, according to "Reign", she was sleeping with half of France Hmm 🤣)
