I have Prime, Netflix and the usual UK catchup services. Any recommendations gratefully received Smile

Have you seen The Turn of the Screw (with Michelle Dockery) or The Innocents (b&w version of same story) with Deborah Kerr?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 20/12/2021 16:45

I haven’t seen The Haunting of Bly Manor on Netflix but that’s also based on the same story.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 20/12/2021 16:53

Do you mean specifically a Ghost story about Christmas or do you just mean one to watch at Christmas? In any case there’s a few Mark Gatiss things on this year including his new version of The Amazing Mr Blunden starring David Tennant, The Mezzotint this year’s christ story from him. There’s also his previous ones available The Dead Room, Crooked House. He also did some MR James stuff, a documentary and an adaptation of The Tractate Middoth and also Martin’s Close.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 20/12/2021 16:57

There’s also The Twelve Days of Christine an Inside No. 9 episode (sublime television). If you just want films then Ghost Stories (the Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson film) is excellent and incredibly sad. If, however, you’d like something not involving a previous member of The League of Gentlemen (😉😂) then, The Others (based on The Turn of the Screw) is also excellent……and also incredibly sad.

Meant to add, they’re all traditional sort of gothic ghost stories rather than modern jump scares.

That's what I'm looking for. Ideally set in the past. I think I've seen most of the ones which have been on mainstream TV over the last few years but I will check out some of those titles. Thank you

Looking forward to The Mezzotint on Christmas Eve. The MR James stories are always incredibly creepy.

curiouscatgotkilled · 21/12/2021 23:17

Krampus is on Netflix until 24th. It's great! More hammer horror than ghost story but a good watch.

orderlyfashion · 21/12/2021 23:26

I loved the original "amazing Mr Blunden"- an absolute cracker of a ghost story. I believe they've remade it and it's showing I think in BBC over the Christmas weekend

DaisyNGO · 21/12/2021 23:33

Crooked House is brilliant! They usually show that at xmas.

Friendviv1987 · 21/12/2021 23:37

I am definitely not a ghost believer…but last night I was in the kitchen and I saw a shadow walk from our living room to our staircase!! Thought it was my son but he was in bed …can honestly say that it was a very weird experience!!

VaulterTech · 21/12/2021 23:39

Haunting of hill house Netflix series is just amazing!

Also the ‘a Christmas carol’ reading on bbc sounds is lovely.

Following

Haunting of hill house is brilliant

Haunting of Eli manor good but not as good as hill house

stillvicarinatutu · 21/12/2021 23:48

Oh and I loved the amazing mr bludnen as a kid ....when's the remake on?
Diana Dors was a brilliant baddie !

Luredbyapomegranate · 21/12/2021 23:52

The lady in black is at least… winter-y

Positivelypatient · 21/12/2021 23:53

Amazing Mr Blunden - I am searching for that one, the original is something that sticks in my mind from childhood. Thank you for this info @MandyMotherOfBrian !

GreenClock · 22/12/2021 00:10

Remember Tales of the Unexpected? They’re all on iplayer currently. There are two good ones set at Christmas. One is Back for Christmas and the other is The Party. Great casts, great twists.

Interesting to see early 1980s props and clothes too.

Howshouldibehave · 22/12/2021 00:14

Haunting of Eli manor

What’s that on, @stillvicarinatutu

ItRainedForever · 22/12/2021 00:17

BBC Four has been showing some of the 1970s MR James adaptations recently. They're on iPlayer if you haven't already seen them. The Ice House was this week's. Previous ones were The Signalman, The Ash Tree, Stigma, and The Treasure of Abbot Thomas (that one comes off iPlayer tomorrow if you want to catch it!).

ItRainedForever · 22/12/2021 00:18

(Not all MR James, actually, but in that vein and originally shown around Christmas)

DeclareThePenniesOnYourEyes · 22/12/2021 00:22

I enjoyed the 2019 A Christmas Carol on the BBC. Certainly spooky. It’s all on YouTube .

greatape · 22/12/2021 08:35

Any I can watch with dds? They are 12/early teens so I want spooky but not too disconcerting. They love stuff like Agatha Christie and murder mystery stuff (they were raised on a hard core diet of scooby doo from a young age)

For reference I got scared by the Daniel Radcliffe woman in black so I am a big wussy wuss. I find any adaptation of the turn of the screw very upsetting

orderlyfashion · 22/12/2021 17:53

The Amazing Mr Blunden is on Sky Max on Christmas Eve. It's totally child friendly. The original fab too

stillvicarinatutu · 22/12/2021 21:11

Haunting of Eli manor

Howshouldibehave · 22/12/2021 21:47

Ahhh, do you mean Bly Manor?
