Oh is it available now? I've been keeping an eye out on iplayer but not checked for a while. DD will be pleased.

Youngatheart00 · 29/11/2021 19:21

Ooh lovely! This was a great gentle watch during the first lockdown

Comedycook · 29/11/2021 19:21

Oh exciting...will try to persuade DD to watch with me!

Yummypumpkin · 29/11/2021 19:22

I didn't realise there was a first series. Oh the joy! What platform is it on?

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 29/11/2021 19:22

We're up to episode 8. Missing the old Miss Grayling & Pamela & Miss Potts but enjoying it!

The first series was excellant. I absolutely loved it. I think the BBC should show it on BBC1 as Sunday evening family viewing.

Yummypumpkin · 29/11/2021 20:17

Iplayer! Awesome! Thanks!

PlinkPlankPlunk · 29/11/2021 20:20

Brilliant! I had forgotten another series was coming. Really loved the first

FelicityBeedle · 29/11/2021 20:26

Oh I loved watching the first while sewing masks in lockdown! Is the first one on iplayer too? Would love to catch up

KillingMeDeftly · 29/11/2021 21:22

Yes, both series are on iPlayer. I'm enjoying it but the meanness has been toned down from the books. I mean, Alicia was vicious!

Platax · 02/12/2021 17:39

I've just started on series 2. Bit odd that they've just got rid of Emily and Katherine with no explanation, especially after the fuss in the last series about whether Emily could stay. And the useless teacher is already beginning to annoy me.

I think both had disappeared by the second book. There was also a Violet who vanished. Blyton did that a fair bit - Jean was last seen in the third form and Daphne had vanished by the time they got to their final term.

I really hope Zerelda makes an appearance in the next series!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/12/2021 19:17

Is a male teacher in a girls boarding school a feasible scenario? I thought they tended to be women.

KillingMeDeftly · 02/12/2021 19:19

It was definitely Miss "Nosey" Parker in the books but I remember there was a male music teacher.

Yummypumpkin · 02/12/2021 20:55

There are men running girls boarding houses, with their wives usually. I know some very lovely men who do it.

I was meaning in the 1940s when the programme is set.

Oh sorry!!!! I was on this thread and another thread about boarding today. I have no idea!

Kanaloa · 03/12/2021 11:51

I wasn’t keen on the first one. It didn’t feel like an adaptation of the Malory Towers books, it felt like an entirely new TV show where some of the characters had the same names as the Malory Towers characters.

I don’t mind an adaptation changing things up a bit, but it bore quite little resemblance to the original material, and the characters were totally different people to the book characters.

batmanladybird · 03/12/2021 11:56

Oh yay

NotSure94 · 03/12/2021 12:03

I think it's lovely. The way they've diversified it is well done I think although obviously that's not how it was written but then Enid Blyton was - ahem - of her time.

The casting is interesting - I love that Alicia is american - I can't recall if that was in the book but it really fits. Irene is lovely too, spot on. I'm missing Bill and his horses, Clarissa, Daphne... and the artisty one who pals up with Irene... but I think there are more seasons commissioned.

OMG and Zerelda! Didn't she stir things up!

Kanaloa · 03/12/2021 12:21

It’s not the diversity I mind at all! I’m not that type of person. It’s more that if you were going to change the storylines and characters completely, it would have been better to make a new programme about new characters. It just seemed a bit odd to make a Malory towers adaptation and decide to change the characters and plots completely.

So things like Alicia being American - if I remember correctly she was quite disparaging of Zerelda the American character! Also I felt like Alicia was quite a lot nicer, while in the books she was very sharp which is how when her downfall comes about she learns to reign herself in.

I think it was Mr Young.
KillingMeDeftly · 03/12/2021 13:19

Bill and her horses show up in book 3, Clarissa in 4. Looks like they've done away with Daphne.

I suppose they couldn't stick exactly to the spirit of the books as the characters are quite mean. It's ironic that Alicia in the TV series is both American and slightly overweight - book Alicia would've teased her mercilessly about that!
