Jo Baiao, who has won British and German championships and is the dance partner of former Strictly star Kristina Rihanoff, has said that the ballroom industry now prefers to use the term ‘equality dance couples’, ‘gender-free dancers’ or in some cases ‘mixed dance couples’.
He has hit out at Strictly for occasionally using the term ‘same sex couples’ when describing the show’s contestants.

I think the term

"FFS!"

is appropriate here.

I get sick of all of this mucking about with language. What is wrong with "same=sex"? They ARE the same sex. the other designations are just word salad in my view.

*same-sex, not same=sex

Apologies - hit the wrong button.

Who gives a fuck what this straight man thinks? Seriously, why is anyone paying him any attention?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 21/11/2021 20:16

We really really don't...

In fact, you're far more likely to see "all girls" or "all ladies".

Clymene · 21/11/2021 20:22

Dear Jo
Piss off with your virtue signalling

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 21/11/2021 20:32

Actually, that isn't quite true.

Equality dancing is a thing, but it's a bit separate. You might get an equality dance competition (run by an equality dance body), but you'd never get something called an equality round at a Sunday circuit competition.

I just quite entertained by the judges:

Saturday - Tom, you should actually cry..let it out - cry.

“Sunday” - crying now, mate?

Someone on twitter has pointed out that this "world famous professional dancer" has had a twitter account for 3 years and has only 35 followers.

Hardly influential - trying to make a name for himself, I think.

A lot of this year's couples could be described as "equality" WRT disability, race (we've had mixed race and similar race pairings) or same sex pairing. John and Johnannes are both of the same sex, neither identifies as a different gender and the term "same sex" is accurate in the context used by Strictly.

I think Strictly is pretty good at taking in diverse humans and putting their dancing at the heart of it so what makes those people "diverse" falls into the background. I love watching John & Johannes dance because it's a pair of people dancing beautifully. Same for Rose and Giovani. Their backgrounds aren't irrelevant, but it's their dancing that speaks to me first.
