What did Dan say? I missed it. Confused

ElftonWednesday · 14/11/2021 13:50

Something about representing men who can't dance across the country. I thought it was pretty innocuous at the time but some people have read more into it.

DontWantTheRivalry · 14/11/2021 13:51

I’m thinking Tilly will be in the dance off.

Can’t think who she’d be up against, it feels like R&G, J&J and A&K are in a different league and the rest are all on par with each other. The other are all destined to go home so it doesn’t really matter which order it happens in really does it.

Thank you Smile

Dan doesn't like criticism and is very vocal about it.

I like John and Johannes. However last night's dance made me think that John is not as good as I previously thought.

placemats · 14/11/2021 14:03

But Strictly isn't a showcase for men who can't dance.

I hate that. It assumes, incorrectly, that women are born with dance moves.

covetingthepreciousthings · 14/11/2021 14:06

"I feel very passionately that dancing, and this programme, has got to be for people who have never danced before, doesn't it? I mean, there are brilliant people out there, people who are trained, people who are professionals, but the whole world this has opened up for me over the last few weeks, and Nadiya has taken me by the hand and said 'come out here, I know you're worried, but I can make you smile and when you smile people will smile with you and you can enjoy it', and that's a whole new langauge to me that I've learned. in the last few weeks and I absolutely love it."

^ What Dan said.

covetingthepreciousthings · 14/11/2021 14:08

For what it's worth I don't agree that it should be just for people who have never danced before, some of the best routines have come from celebs who have had some form of previous dance training... Jay, Danny..

Faevern · 14/11/2021 14:11

I thought the celebs did the choreography too, I’ve definitely heard the judges congratulating them on that before.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 14/11/2021 14:12

I think Dan slips back into presenter mode at times.

I didn't mind his little speech — it was basically a journey talk. Mind you, I haven't been that upset about anybody who's left yet, I might change my mind if better dancers start going over him!

ElftonWednesday · 14/11/2021 14:15

I think the pro dancers should do the choreography and it's cheating to get someone else to. I'd maybe make an exception for couple's choice as they would have little experience of street, commercial, contemporary etc.

GrouchyKiwi · 14/11/2021 14:16

The pros usually do the choreography, apart from for the specialist dances. Definitely Charleston and AT get outside help, Couple's Choice, maybe salsa?

SoupDragon · 14/11/2021 14:19

I agree. He looked really stiff and awkward but I think that was because Johannes showed him up in that respect - he's just so fluid!

I think they do choreograph the standard dances. It's only the Charleston, Argentine Tango and Couple's Choice (I think) that they have outside help on.

ElftonWednesday · 14/11/2021 14:20

I agree with what Dan said, even though I have danced before and enjoy it while having at least some knowledge of what the judges are looking for, and enjoy watching celebrities who did tap classes when they were 8 etc. Where they should draw the line is not having people like Denise Van Outen who had already danced professionally on stage in a musical.

I would love to see Strictly - The Professionals though where celebs who have been trained in other areas of dance get to do Ballroom and Latin.

GrouchyKiwi · 14/11/2021 14:22

I think they get a good mix of people who can dance and people who can't. A cast full of people the level of Dan would be awful to watch, IMO. You need the contrast of abilities to make for a good show.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 14/11/2021 14:22

It makes sense. They do the normal ten then will probably need help for the speciality dances (salsa, AT, Charleston, couples' choice, AS). I suspect most of them can manage an AS though, because it's a bit like a "show" ballroom dance.

Yes, like series one. Good grief, there was a huge leap in standard to series two.

EsmaCannonball · 14/11/2021 14:25

With one or two exceptions the pros do not choreograph Couple's Choice, the Argentine tango, the Charleston, the salsa or the showdance.

Dan (who I did vote for a couple of weeks ago) has a habit of doing that 'Can I just say .....' thing. He does it all the time on ITT when Janette or Rylan have just wrapped up the interview. There was one episode where Janette didn't have time left to tell the viewers what was coming up on the next show because Dan had to get a word in. As someone who works in live television he must know what he's doing.

StucklnAMuumuuCantGetOutOflt · 14/11/2021 14:27

There's no way John could have kept up with Johannes - as a pp said, might have been better had John wore the yellow and Jojo the blue but the main issue is the side-by-side comparison and Jojo refusing to dance down. Whenever a pro dances their best/their heart out/showboats, it automatically shows up who they are dancing with.
I gave them a vote regardless.
I also thought AJ was hampered by costume, choreo, death slot (second) and lighting, so I gave her a vote too.
My third vote went to Dan because I like a classy AS and it showed some improvement, plus, whilst I have no idea who chose the song or why, I applauded Nadiya for refusing to be cowed into a dodgy theme (see equally dodgy AS tunes Road to Amarillo/Hi ho silver lining with road signs hitchhiking/motorbikes).

For me, it should also be AJ, John and Rose as top three - not because of BAME/LGBT/Deaf - although diversity and representation are a bonus - but because they have been the most interesting to watch.

Technically, it is currently John, AJ, Rhys, Rose and Tilly at the top on averages (in that order) based on judge's scores and not taking into account over- and undermarking. Wink Rhys, as others have said, gives no light and shade in his dancing. Tilly has done well for a complete beginner but not finals standard (never say never though - I said the same about Gemma).

That leaves Tom, Sara and Dan. Tom has been utterly forgettable for me this series. Sara has been very lucky considering she was originally down as First Boot and has had a couple of dodgy routines. Dan has shown gumption but not as much as a journey as he thinks he has - I liked his AS but I also liked his QS week one. He has also had some dodgy routines in between, but been more memorable than
Tom.

AJ/Rose/John are my favourites - any of the other five can go and I shan't be as upset as I was Nina leaving. As to the order, it's much of a muchness now so in terms of pros then, I'd prefer Nadiya and Nikita over Amy whilst Aljaz and Nancy annoy me with their over enthusiasm/shrill screaming. Aljaz began doing that with Gemma. No idea why. We can see what we see and judge accordingly.

Lottapianos · 14/11/2021 14:32

Very weird show last night I thought. The judges were bizarre, almost like they had been told to shake things up deliberately. I thought they were way too hard on AJ, Rhys was way overmarked, and as for the fawning over Dan! It was all a bit tiring. Rose and Gio's dance was beautiful and very special. John and JoJo are my faves, but tbh would be happy if anyone out of John, Rose or AJ won. Just PLEASE let's get rid of Dan tonight!

MackenCheese · 14/11/2021 14:34

Checking in!

They're my top three and I hadn't even though of the diversity aspect! They have definitely been the most enjoyable.

SoupDragon · 14/11/2021 14:36

Dan is dancing like I would - all the right steps in the right order (mostly!) but not actually dancing.

iklboo · 14/11/2021 14:52

Thanks for the new thread Polka. Some mighty weird scoring last night. Who'd put viagra in Anton's paddles?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 14/11/2021 14:58

I really liked J&J at the beginning, but if they got knocked out in the semi-finals for a journey contestant (possibly Tilly or Rhys) I wouldn't be that upset.

They've had a couple of dances I didn't think were fantastic (the AS, and I thought their Charleston was a bit safe) and even though he's a very good dancer, I'm not sure he's getting better at this point. If they have a fab ballroom I might reconsider though — I'm fickle like that. Grin
