I have this on in the background. Not really my type of show anyway but I’m struggling to see Bradley Walsh as anything other than Bradley Walsh. Does anyone else who has seen this think the same? I don’t know if it’s a lack of acting skills or whether it’s because he’s been on TV every day for the last X amount of years but it’s like he’s playing himself in a country setting.

I recorded the first one. It was dire. So won't watch it again. Such a waste of effort for everyone involved.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 31/10/2021 20:23

It's absolute tripe.

SoniaFouler · 31/10/2021 20:28

Is it supposed to be set in the olden days or a modern day but small village? I thought the former but I’m confused as to how everyone seems to be acting modern.

Definitely won’t be watching again (tbh I’m not really watching it now, I just want background noise).

SoniaFouler
I agree with you about Bradley Walsh. To me he will always be Mike Baldwin's nephew who turned out to be his son on Corrie.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 31/10/2021 20:35

i just went to look up to see when it was set, confused with their modern ways, TV dinners? stripping off? Jeans? yet meant to be 1950s

GinIronic · 31/10/2021 20:36

The original series was terrific.

Oh yes I forgot he was in Corrie. And then his own son had an affair with his wife!

I thought 40s/50s but the modern parts made me have doubts

I think somebody said it was 1958 last week.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 31/10/2021 21:03

It's terrible and he's terrible
There are elements I like, the diversity of casting is welcome and the younger kids are acted somewhat better than in the original but overall it's pants

CoolShoeshine · 31/10/2021 21:19

Yes it’s a bit poo. Bradley was actually good in Corrie imo but I think the pp is correct in saying he’s on tv too much nowadays. Also the actress playing Ma is nowhere near as good as Pam Ferris’ original-she seems to be trying to play the character in exactly the same way but has nowhere near as much warmth and humour. The smaller kids are the only improvement.

Mosky · 31/10/2021 21:20

I think it's so outrageously bad it's fun to watch. Never saw the original but Im actually enjoying this in a perverse kind of way.

Jjjayfee · 31/10/2021 22:57

It is not like life in the fifties. The David Jacobs Darling Buds of May was so much better imo.

RiverSkater · 01/11/2021 00:49

Going against the grain here but I'm really enjoying it!

Cast are great, scenery amazing and it's gentle entertainment.

As for when it's set, the original novels were all confused themselves.

I am wondering where they got all the summer weather from though!

JacquelineCarlyle · 01/11/2021 00:54

I'm enjoying it for the gentle entertainment too.

toomuchlaundry · 01/11/2021 00:55

Would a strawberry harvest be the same time bluebells are out?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 01/11/2021 07:01

i never saw the original

0blio · 01/11/2021 09:08

It's awful, not a patch on the original which was wonderful. This version is just not historically accurate and the acting feels very wooden.

JacquelineCarlyle · 01/11/2021 16:04

I agree it's not a patch on the original but right now I'm enjoying gentle easy-watching TV!

Butteredtoast55 · 01/11/2021 21:44

Bradley Walsh was great in Law and Oder UK but The Larkins is just dreadful. Charmless and unnecessarily altered from what were great characters and storylines in the books.

Magicpaintbrush · 03/11/2021 10:30

I thought I would stick with this and see if it got better as it settled in - just watched episode 4 and dare I say it I think it is getting better as it's going along. Actually quite enjoyed that one and the characters are starting to feel a bit more fleshed out.

I love the original series and I don't think it can be matched, but think it's worth giving this one a go. I think there is one thing that I actually prefer to the original, and that is Charley - I could never understand why Mariette fell in love with Charley in the original series as he was such an absolute drip (as nice as he was) and she was such a catch with a passionate and ambitious character, but in this new version I can actually see the appeal and why she would fall for him, they seem better matched (though I prefer CZJ as Mariette as this new actress has a hard edge that I like less).

Still don't understand why the Larkin's house is so grand with neatly trimmed topiary in the garden but you can't have everything.

But yes, I think it's worth sticking with this. Liking the General and Edith Pilchester as well, both very likeable.

Hearwego · 06/11/2021 20:21

Haven’t seen this although I like Bradley Walsh.
I remember the Darling buds of May , with David Jason, I was at school at the time-must have been 30 years ago ?
Personally I don’t really see the point in this remake though and won’t bother watching any more if it.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 07/11/2021 08:24

They are writing original stories for this one which at least moves it away from such direct comparison. I don't like the random new love interest for marriette. All in all I'm not sure why I'm still watching but I am I guess so it must not be too bad.

wonderstuff · 07/11/2021 08:34

I quite like it, I prefer Mariette in this to CZJ in DBoM, BW isn’t as good as David Jason, but that’s a very tough act to follow! It’s quite sweet, I’m not to bothered about historical accuracy, I really like the diverse casting, if it’s good enough for Bridgerton..

That said I live in a village that has a similar event to the pram race in the first episode and that did grate because it was so far fetched that it would get that messy!
