I keep catching odd episodes or parts of on UKTV and I can bear it no longer

Does he wake up in the end?
I just saw the tail end of the one wher he meets his dad in the woods and he lets him run off?
Does he wake up or what?
Please tell me.

Yes, he wakes up, but finds real life so incredibly dull and grey, he jumps off a building again so he can go back into Gene Hunt fantasy-land.

A marvellously moody waster none-the-less. I think the implication is that he dies, so not so much of a waster if he's now ashes on his mum's mantelpiece.
