That’s a great post @SequinsandStiIettos and makes me think about him in a new light, how it must feel to have that acceptance as a black man and a gay man.

Bluffinwithmymuffin · 25/10/2021 15:20

Sequins
It is interesting to me that Johannes thought there was disapproval of an interracial couple, especially as everyone is shipping Kai and AJ. I don't think it was that angle at all, but more ageism/cougar trope/people being unsure over consent at the time (even though article makes it crystal clear it was consensual and part of the choreo and Jojo was in on the gag)...but I could be wrong and there may have been a racist element too.

I can’t think of a single reason why licking someone’s arm is funny, creative, appropriate or relevant in any way in the context of a dance routine, Covid or no Covid. I’d also suggest that since arm-licking has never to my knowledge featured in a dance anywhere before, it’s not something people would want to see. I’ve not even considered any of the moral elements tbh; for me it was simply a silly, wrong move that lent nothing whatsoever to the routine.

SunshineCake1 · 25/10/2021 15:26

I didn't like Caroline Quentin licking Johannes as jr just looked awful. Nothing to do with J being black. I also hated the mouth open position she took when trying to be sexy. It just wasn't.

SequinsandStiIettos · 25/10/2021 15:27

The whole routine was meant to be funny. I hated it at the time and I wasn't alone. On here, it was argued over whether it was planned or not and how inappropriate it would have been for any routine.
But that's not how Johannes saw it. He totally viewed it as backlash against a white woman licking a black man on prime time telly. Which would explain his tearfulness atm for the positivity regarding his partnership with Johannes.

Bluffinwithmymuffin · 25/10/2021 15:29

... reading Sequin’s post again, CQ comes across as a bit defensive about whole thing and more than likely rues the moment she agreed with Johanne that the arm lick was a good idea Grin

Bluffinwithmymuffin · 25/10/2021 15:32

Johannes- not Johanne. He certainly seems much happier this year, so all’s well that ends well I guess.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 25/10/2021 15:54

I am now stanning Rose to the final and I am giving all of you being uncalled for the evil eye. Rose and Joe Varney for the win!

LastToBePicked · 25/10/2021 15:54

I agree with this. Some of the strictly pros really do it all for their partners - ie Gio, but Johannes seems to be pulling a lot of the attention on to him. It’s lovely that he feels so comfortable and happy dancing with John, but I’d prefer a bit more of the focus on John rather than Johannes always saying what a big deal it it to him / crying / etc etc

I couldn’t agree less with this - I think this year’s Strictly is as much a journey for Johannes as it is for John, and to be part of the first male couple on Strictly is a huge deal for him in terms of what it means for acceptance. He is clearly someone who wears his heart on his sleeve and is genuinely emotional about it, and I love how much J&J are supporting each other in different ways. It makes me really happy to see them together.

ScienceSensibility · 25/10/2021 15:56

If the gossip is true, I’m surprised at Kai becoming personally involved with his dance partner.

This is his first year on Strictly and one would have thought he would want to prove to the producers what a professional he can be.

Yes, they’re both single. However, any romantic relationship in the workplace has the potential to go very wrong.

I may be old fashioned, but, he is her teacher, and it just adds to the trope that dancing with someone is one step away from shagging them, hence many celebrities turning down the show.

covetingthepreciousthings · 25/10/2021 16:07

Has it ever been mentioned if there are any clauses in their contracts about relationships with their partners?

I'm assuming not considering how many there has been, but it must be a bit frowned upon by the producers etc..

Samcro · 25/10/2021 16:08

I find Tom really irritating, don't know why.
I really want Sara, Aj or John to win.
I have a soft spot for Dan after he sorted that fly pass.
but he won't go much further.

I don’t watch BBC breakfast so I don’t really know Dan Walker, but I did remember him from the Olympics coverage, did anyone else remember when a hen party gatecrashed his presenting on the beach in Rio? I’ve shared in case anyone hasn’t seen, he does just seem genuinely nice.

Fenelladepompom · 25/10/2021 16:48

Sara's not going to win, sorry.

EsmaCannonball · 25/10/2021 17:09

I love that Caroline went into Strictly proclaiming that she was going to take it very, very seriously and prove that a woman who was middle-aged and generously proportioned didn't have to become the comedy act, and then she went out on a routine that would have been turned down by Arthur Mullard and Hylda Baker.

Redcrayons · 25/10/2021 17:09

Interesting he thought the licking thing was because he’s black. If I remember rightly it was a massive cringe fest because she’s a lot older than him chasing him round Benny Hill style. If Anton had been chasing and licking a 20 something round it would have been the same. The fact that it his idea casts it in a different light.

I do think he needs to reign it in a bit though, it’s. It about him.

Redcrayons · 25/10/2021 17:10

*it’s not about him

Runningupthecurtains · 25/10/2021 17:31

Licking would have been gross and inappropriate at anytime but in the height of a global pandemic it was just so wrong. It would have been wrong between any dancer and celeb and Johannes and CQ made a huge misjudgedment if they thought it was funny - it wasn't it was creepy and inappropriate. Given that we were being told not to visit our family, see our friends or go within 2m of strangers it was even more weird.

I think the producers love it. Pages of free publicity.
JemimaTab · 25/10/2021 17:51

Re the Caroline / Johannes licking incident, despite what they said afterwards, I’m still sceptical that it was pre-planned.

... I wondered that too, Jemima. I can imagine them discussing the possibility of a kiss, maybe, but who’d say “I know, why don’t you lick my arm and gurn lasciviously at the camera? That’ll get us a few votes.”

lollipoprainbow · 25/10/2021 18:04

@ScienceSensibility tbh I find it all a bit unsavoury, yes they are both single but at least wait until the show until you get together ! Her trembling lips and face with his face right near hers at the end made me feel uncomfortable.

True.

I’ve voted for Sara once or twice, among others (Rose or AJ for the win) but I was a bit put off by the way she reacted to the judges’ criticism this week; didn’t look at all happy - indignant, in fact - and although she’s done very well so far, she’s not the best by any means, and I wonder if she thinks she’s better than she actually is? Bit like Bill Bailey (whisper it).

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 25/10/2021 18:12

I loved most of the Strictly TV themes - but bloody hell John, put some clothes on!!
