which other teams were nominated for the Team of the Year award, DH and I both ended up being out of the room when the nominations were announced, and came back to see the Rugby Team getting their award......but we want to know who else was nominated..we saw all the others

Thanks

Oh and wasn't the "Unsung Hero" winner amazing - 85 and still involved with the football club she set up!

it was the swimming team, i know that much, because imo they should have won it (since they actually won medals, and didn't come second by the skin of their teeth!!!)

Raahh · 10/12/2007 12:36

can't remember the other team though, think it could have been a football team.

nimnom · 10/12/2007 12:36

The other teams were Scotland Football Team and the British cycling team.
Yes, she was truly amazing and would probably do a very good job with England!

nimnom · 10/12/2007 12:41

Raah,
I sort of agree with you, but what the England rugby team did was pretty amazing - they really turned things around against all the odds. They pulled together as a team, gave each other a bollocking and then got on and did the job(well, nearly). If the England Football team had even a fraction of that sort of team spirit then maybe they might get somewhere.
On the cyclists - I was surprised that Victoria Pendleton didn't make it into the shortlist. I don't think Jonny Wilkinson or Jason Robinson should have been there ( and that's coming from Jonny's biggest fan )

TheIceQueen · 10/12/2007 12:42

thanks - so there football was up there for the "general" awards (not counting Unsung Hero and Lifetime Achievement which don't count IMO) - just not England

Raahh - they didn't come 2nd "by the skin of their teeth" - yes they had a pretty shocking group stage - BUT they beat Australia AND France - and became one of the few (possibly the 1st??) World Champions to actually reach the final to defend their title!!!

Well said Ice Queen. I was so glad that Football ahrdly featured last night. It made a pleasant change.

TheIceQueen · 10/12/2007 13:06

Of course the only football team that did really well - Arsenal Ladies team having won the Quadruple - had a quick mention, the camera on them for a split second and that was it ...

I said to DH at 8pm.....no football yet - isn't it lovely - I hope we're not going to have 1/2hr of in the last hour - but we didn't .

And only on Football nomination in the other awards! We decided to "let off" Robson and the Unsung Hero winners - as that was for work over a very long period of time and therefore very well deserved LOL.

Football is getting a bad image at the moment though - the general impression of sporting ambition and dedication is being wrestled away from them and into the hands of other sports where we perceive them to be more focused on being the best at what they do. rather than getting the best deal they can.

Raahh · 10/12/2007 13:10

ok, consider myself told off- i just think it would have been nice for a less supported sport to get some recogntion. I love rugby though, really, i do!!!

and i agree it was nice to have less footy

nimnom · 10/12/2007 13:17

Definitely let Sir Bobby off - i never thought I'd blub at Sorts Personality of the Year!!

MaureenMLovesmincepies · 10/12/2007 13:26

Ladies football got a mention. Arsenal ladies won FA Cup, League Title, European cup and another one that slips my mind atm! Just shows you, if you want a job done properly, leave it to the ladies!

TheIceQueen · 10/12/2007 15:14

Maureen - they got a fleeting mention - if that had been the mens Arsenal team they'd have had 5 minutes (minimum) dedicated to them

We voted for Toseland (who was an extremely close 4th place behind Hatton) - as we didn't really feel there was any one "outstanding" person of the group - I and thought his piano playing was FABULOUS.

gah! missed this, so who won what then??

VanillaPumpkin · 10/12/2007 15:21

I always cry at Sports Personality

happystory · 10/12/2007 15:22

Thought the Bobby Robson standing ovation was one of those most moving things I've seen in ages. Ebven with all the people he's met over the years you could tell he was dead chuffed that Alex Ferguson had turned up to present the award. And when he mentioned his wife.....sob....

Highlander · 10/12/2007 15:32

OMG though - has Sir Bobby had a stroke? I missed the end of his speech.

christmosschops30 · 10/12/2007 15:34

loved sir bobby getting up, he's a national hero. me and dh both thought he looked v. old though. He hasnt lost any of his humour though!

Thought Hatton would win was a bit gutted, soooo glad that whiny Lewis Hamilton didnt win. Well deserved by Joe Calzaghe though

TheIceQueen · 10/12/2007 16:06

But imagine being Ramprakash and dancing in a sparkly shirt in front of all those sporting bods! lol

iwouldgoouttonight · 10/12/2007 16:18

TheIceQueen - I agree about the women's football team - they showed them for about two seconds, quickly mentioned that they'd won the quadruple, and then went on to show a montage of men's football! If a men's team had won all that they'd be up for team of the year, have a ten minute report on them, etc, etc. I was v annoyed but DP pointed out that maybe the women's football hadn't been filmed, at which point I went into a feminist rant about it not being fair that men's sport is given much more importance than women's, etc, etc.

I have calmed down now.

TheIceQueen · 10/12/2007 16:19

I'm certain that it would have been filmed - I've watch English Women's football matches before now (and international) usually on obscure channels, at obscure hours but there IS coverage of it.

I believe the womans cup final was on TV, I think it was against Charlton ladies. It was only on BBC2 though. So true about the mens football though, so true.
