Watching channel 4 online and either the subtitle option isn't there, or the subtitles can be turned on but don't actually appear.

It's ok for me because I put them on to aid my concentration, but what about people that use them because they're actually deaf.

Channel 4 need to sort it out!

I've noticed that. It's been going on for quite a time now and they will lose any viewers who rely on them.

HollowTalk · 19/10/2021 09:28

It's the same on Channel 4 and E4 on regular television as well, not just on catch up.

NapoleonOzmolysis · 19/10/2021 09:30

It's something to so with the fire at the broadcast centre of Red Bee Media, which runs access services for Channel 4.

Is this not due to the ongoing issue caused by a fire which has destroyed the systems? It’s been widely reported. Unless it’s something different.

You're probably right

www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-58965380 just saw this.

Simonjt · 19/10/2021 12:02

Its going to be like this until November, my son is hearing impaired so he needs subtitles for anything he watches as the sound on most TV shows isn’t hearing impaired friendly.

We have noticed that iplayer has also stopped the option of subtitles on most live TV shows as well, so no channel 4 or bbc for us at the moment.

HollowTalk · 19/10/2021 12:08

Odd that the BBC is all over inclusivity yet isn't showing subtitles.

rageagainstbing · 19/10/2021 12:12

I wondered this too. It seemed to happen when our virgin box was updated but interesting to know it could be a C4 fault instead. Like others I'm not hearing impaired but I like having the tv on low when the kids are in bed so it's pretty useful.

I also can't watch the last episodes of married at first sight which is not life ruining in any way but I've invested many hours in the rest 😂

SlipperFeet · 19/10/2021 12:13

I rely on subtitles as I am hearing impaired and this has been massively disappointing for me. I haven't been able to watch my favourite shows the last few weeks and have had to ask DH to repeat what they are saying for me. I wish they'd sort it out quicker Sad

How is it odd? It’s not the BBC’s fault.

It’s really frustrating, if the issue was no sound you can guarantee it would be fixed extremely quickly, it’s pure ableism.
BingBongToTheMoon · 19/10/2021 12:15

@daisypond it is. @HollowTalk is talking about the iPlayer.

HollowTalk · 19/10/2021 12:19

@daisypond Lack of subtitles on iPlayer IS the BBC's fault.

daisypond · 19/10/2021 12:30

Yes, I know there aren’t subtitles on iPlayer. But it’s all due to the same fire that has destroyed the systems. The broadcasters themselves don’t make and play out the subtitles. If subtitles have stopped appearing in the last couple of weeks, it’s down to the fire.

LeekChic · 19/10/2021 12:55

It's the fire at Red Bee.

Anyone wanting updates - Scott Bryan is covering it on Twitter.

LeekChic · 19/10/2021 13:07

@scottygb if anyone is interested

purpleme12 · 19/10/2021 18:57

It's the same on channel 5 too
