Starts next week - really looking forward to it. Loved the first series.

OP posts:
Rhannion · 18/10/2021 21:47

He saw the photo of Erin as a wee girl behind a photo in the priest’s office.

Rhannion · 18/10/2021 21:50

Roy was a bad lot too ( if you watch the first series) he was a money lender and general bad guy but it was Phylis who murdered the man who was buried near the church and she also had the children’s home burnt down because that’s where Roy was abused.

Okaytellmewhatisavailablethen · 18/10/2021 22:18

But what I don’t get is how did Max figure out that the born again Priest was actually Erin’s dad. How did Roy find this out?

The priest told Roy - he said he'd been feeling guilty for 39 years. Erin was 39 (or possibly 38 and 3 months). Roy said 'what are you telling me' and walked off very forlornly. I can't remember how we know Erin's age - I think there was some way of working this out from the date of Albert's murder, when Erin was 16. (Um, yes, I have watched this twice - missed some of the detail the first time!)

Yes, Phyliss was also a real villain - I think maybe that was revealed too early on (when we saw Roy visiting, and also when the estate agent guy was knifed), so it wasn't as much of a shock as it could have been - we needed a bit more time thinking of her as lovely funny mum before the revelation! But Roy was a real bad guy too - more obvious in series 1.

So the car crash that put Phyllis in the wheelchair that happened after the bloody Christmas Eve - that was somehow related to the woolly hat lady's grants death - what happened there then?

And all that talk of the Lynch son - what was that about?

Okaytellmewhatisavailablethen · 20/10/2021 20:54

Vicar was driving the car that pushed Phyllis's car off the road and (she pretended) left her unable to walk.

But Phyllis was in fact driving Roy's car - so I think vicar (obviously this was before he came a vicar) was angry with Roy for provoking him (vicar) to kill Albert (although in reality Albert had already been dying). So vicar went to get revenge on Roy a few days later by pushing his car off the road, but it turned out to be Phyllis. Another reason why vicar was seeking redemption.
All clear?

There was a Lynch son? I missed that...

NapoleonOzmolysis · 20/10/2021 21:47

Ah OK. That makes sense. And Granny was a bystander?

His name was Adrian, he stayed with Roy when he and Phyllis split. DH remembers this as well, I don't think I'm making it up.

NapoleonOzmolysis · 20/10/2021 21:54

But what I don’t get is how did Max figure out that the born again Priest was actually Erin’s dad.

The priest had been drinking with Kenny years before and told Kenny about a child he never saw, then Max found the photo of a young Erin in the priest's office when he was skulking in there when Roy was there.

Etinoxaurus · 21/10/2021 23:14

Just discovered it, loving it.

Puffinhead · 22/10/2021 17:03

So how is everyone enjoying it? I’ve now watched it 3 times and think I have finally made sense of it all - well, most of it. I still can’t work out what exactly Roy Lynch et al did to Jackie (woolly hat lady) but maybe you don’t actually need to know - whatever it was was enough for her to go ‘rogue’ and sacrifice Max at the end.

It’s worth repeat viewing - I thought it was excellent. Love Mark Bonnar (best line was ‘who gets run over by a bus’) and also partial to Emum Elliot (Kenny). Might now rewatch the first series.

Puffinhead · 22/10/2021 17:06

I also still think that Phyllis Logan will take pills at the end to avoid prison.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 26/10/2021 06:23

i think i need to watch it again, it was quite difficult but happy with the ending.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 26/10/2021 06:28

the vicar killed albert? i thought it was phyllis who killed albert?

Okaytellmewhatisavailablethen · 26/10/2021 16:41

The vicar thought he had killed Albert, Mrs L, but in fact Phyllis had already administered a fatal blow by the time Vicar arrived with Roy to meet Albert (their plan was to confront him). So vicar had lived with the guilt for all these years (also the guilt of having had an affair with Phyllis, and of having driven Phyllis off the road, thinking she was Roy - both of which vicar did in fact do, though it turned out that Phyllis could walk pretty well).

I agree you had to concentrate - am thinking of watching a third time to try to find out about the Lynch son that I had completely missed, and also woolly hat lady's granny - I didn't realise woolly hat lady had mentioned a grandmother. For a while i was assuming that whl was Albert's daughter but I think not - the info about a Christmas eve killing did seem to be a surprise to her.

IntermittentParps · 28/10/2021 10:07

Have skipped to the end as I've only watched two eps, but wanted to ask if any of you have come across the tracklisting for Series 2? I've found Series 1 tracklistings aplenty online, but none for this series. Have resorted to Shazaming a few songs Grin but that's not a proper solution.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 28/10/2021 19:54

I'd not realised the accident stuff about Mrs Lynch and I would like to understand wooly hat lady's motivation. I think I followed most of it. DH was perpetually confused so we kept having to stop it and recap.

Okaytellmewhatisavailablethen · 28/10/2021 20:57

Just rewatched episode 1 in search of a mention of the Lynch son/Adrian. I'd forgotten, but Adrian was the coked up dh of Erin, so a son in law rather than a son. I'll watch on to see if/when Phyllis or Roy mention a son. And rewatch all the scenes featuring a woolly hat for any more clues as to why she's out to get Roy.

In answer to (my) question about whether the Clash record was a coded message from Max to Jake - i think it was a 'sorry, I didn't mean all the awful things I said', because Max had taken jake to the concert - so it was a reminder that they'd had a good time together. Still not quite certain if Max's diatribe to Jake about how he'd ruined everything by being born was fake, intended to fool Phyllis and the other gang members. (Maybe to protect Jake?) Or maybe Max really did hate Jake in that moment!

SomepeopleareTERFSgetoverit · 31/10/2021 15:06

I thought it was significant that Jake said the LP was an act of revenge by the band - in one of the scenes where he was in the room with his minder. The theme of the series seemed to be revenge rather than guilt.

Belindabelle · 11/11/2021 16:44

Bumping this thread as I have just watched and was wondering if anyone had any further theories.

Why was woolly hat woman intent on bringing down Roy
Significance of the Clash album

I think I will need to re watch from season 1.

Rhannion · 13/11/2021 23:05

I have a feeling that the woolly hat police woman had a family member who was killed by Roy or Roy’s heavys. There was a mention of a woman being murdered but I can’t remember which episode in was in. Worth a rewatch I think.

AliceAldridge · 14/11/2021 08:27

I loved it but am really confused and need to rewatch. Who is Woolly Hat Lady? Why did the priest not just tell Erin he was her Dad? Are we to assume Roy has been murdered, and what about Phyllis?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/11/2021 09:28

phyllis was left alone with her tablets

newnamethanks · 16/01/2023 10:14

I loved these. Watch S1 and S2 to get a clear picture of it all but you have to concentrate to connect the jigsaw of pieces. Bring on S3 with all the devious shenanigans we deserve.
