A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking, but we don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, which gets in the way of the drama. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:

FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead

ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
🥾

(boot, peach) = kick up the bum to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but explained or with an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Park Min Young (PMY). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Squid Game... It's good and intriguing ... I think it caught intital attention due to the very violent / gory scenes - unusual for a "kdrama" as i think the general consensus is that korean drama is soapy and fluffy not grim and gritty... so once there was initial attention... then it catches on and gets hyped!... it's good but there are equally fab, beautifully acted, compelling plots in lots of other dramas...However just watched The Marble Game ep last night and that was brilliant story telling !!
I'm still marvelling at how wonderful The Crowned Clown is... it's as brilliant and gorgeous as when i first watched it... I love the scenes between the Clown and the Queen is soooo gorgeous and beautifully done with a touch of pathos / tragedy / heartbreak and yearning and love!!! Sigh!!!!!

@AesopsMables DH is not interested in Squid Game. My siblings are watching but we all are on different continents so can’t plan a watch party due to various time zones & I am too chicken to watch it on my own.
For once my family is interested in Kdrama scene but it’s not my jam 😆.

@Bea I might re-watch Crowned Clown, I have nothing else to watch these days except HTCCC. Well nothing is capturing my attention.

Agree marble game episode the best bit of Squid Game by a mile Bea.

Squid Game’ creator Hwang Dong-hyuk wrote the show in 2009 but was rejected by studios for 10 years

Was it reflected because it was too violent?
I thought Korea had quite strict censorship for tv dramas re sex & violence but judging by Squid Game I must be wrong.

Hi @AesopsMables. I'm really enjoying squid game. Hunger Games on speed imo, with a bit of Tarantino-esque violence thrown in for good measure. I stayed up way past midnight watching last night, and I'm normally a bed by 10 kind of girl.

Amen to that Bea!!
DH and I watched the first episode of Squid Game and enjoyed it, despite me having to suffer the horrible American accents of the dubbing. The violence was so cartoonish it wasn't too traumatic

Just done first two eps of slightly unreconstructed doctor and nurse Jdrama An Incurable Case of Love. Fabulous ridiculously brooding tsundere hero. Loving it.

You can override the dubbing by changing it back to original Korean + English subtitles. DS2 told me the dubbed version is a poor substitute - it misses out the sung nursery rhyme in the red light, green light game, for example.

Just watched Triad Princess- bingeable with forward button.
FL is very different & fun to watch.
Watch it if you have nothing else to watch or parked infront of TV becz too tired & lazy to go to bed (like me).
Only 6 episodes & it ended on a cliffhanger, which is more for 2nd season if they want.
ML is Dimples

It's basically the 80s Harlequin Medical romance you find sandwiched between Michael Crighton thrillers on the bookshelf of a holiday rental cottage FedUp And none the worse for that.

I do like a decent tsundere lead. I have some days off coming up soon. I will investigate.

We have to have the dubbing cos DHs dyslexia can't cope with subtitles, unfortunately. I might rewatch in Korean to get the full effect

I thought Squid Game was fantastic, but it's dark and very violent. Definitely not what I normally want from K drama.

I'm not entirely sure why it has taken off in quite the way it has. I'm a bit worried that it is the violence that appeals (I sound like some 1980s campaigner against video nasties 😳). I had to watch it because everyone was talking about it and I didn't want to miss out. People seem to think it's making some profound comment on capitalism. I'm really not sure though. Could do with reading more about it.

@Andante57 5 days in Seoul will be fab. I spent a month there in 2009 and there is so much to see. It's my favourite city (don't tell DH who grew up in Tokyo).

Apologies if this has been posted before. Also says Squid Game on the way to being Netflix's most watched series ever.

That looks brilliant Sakura, sadly I'm not anywhere near London.

DH and I just started Beyond Evil, I got a bit confused, but I think I've got with the plot now, very creepy though 😬 I've also started when the Camelia Blooms, not sure if I like it yet, but I'll stick with it for now.
