6 Eps are up on iplayer (as are all the original seasons of GG) Me and my DD have just binged the lot over the past 2days. Can report that just like the original it is utter escapist twaddle Grin be warned though if you are watching with teens that it is sexually a lot more graphic than the original and does have some questionable relationship themes Hmm

I don't think it's anything like the original.

It's very tortured in that it's trying too hard and it doesn't have the enjoyable mindless fluff of the original.

Also, so far no good frocks, and that was a big part of the appeal of the original.

Anyway, I only lasted 20 minutes or so and switched over to the original. which is also available on BBC iPlayer.

Ooh! Didnt know this was new. Assume it was the old programme

I'll check it out

I've watched the first 3 issues and I don't think it's as much fun as the original and I struggle to care about any of them. The first one was more about the friendships and relationships, particularly between Blair and Serena - this lot don't seem to care about each other at all. They are trying to tick too many diversity boxes for my liking too.

I binged on the original last year on Netflix and loved it and would much rather rewatch that again. Also agree about the fashion which was a major part of the attraction for me the first time around.

What I found irritating with the casting is that some if the make actors looked very much like the original cast.

babyjuno · 27/08/2021 14:11

I think the original was pretty graphic at times but maybe not the first scene haha!

Agree that this reboot is a bit far fetched. I thought the fashion was very cool and current but also agree it doesn't have the impact of the original.

covetingthepreciousthings · 02/09/2021 07:52

Does anyone remember the ages of the originals like Blair / Serena etc?

I was surprised they made Zoya (?) 14?! But I'm sure a few in the original were meant to be about that age.

It's not really anything like the original, and it does seem to be missing the fun and the fashion of the first.. but I am sticking with it as it's just something different to watch and it's not as terrible as some other things I've watched as long as I don't compare it to the first.

I'm glad it's a continuation rather than a reboot though where they recast Serena and co.

Binge watched it as utter twaddle escapist nonsense last night. I don’t think it’s as fun as tv from 15 years ago - but then it’s made in a post me-too and more socially aware era. Part of the fun of the original was watching ultra rich people behave appallingly with no conscience. This modern reboot is full of angst filled teens and is too self aware.

So much tv from that era (original GG, Gilmore Girls, Scrubs come to mind), was great but would be problematic on some levels to make now (but I do enjoy watching them).

covetingthepreciousthings · 02/09/2021 17:42

@Equalpayquery I think you've hit the nail on the head with that.

Equalpayquery · 02/09/2021 18:12

Thanks - I think we’ve lost our way a bit with tv/comedy especially. If you look at something like scrubs, surely everyone could see Dr Cox was incredibly flawed and bigoted, but that doesn’t mean he can’t also be funny. GG reboot was full of things that are important IRL (many scenes where characters pointedly ask consent - a really important issue), but sort of disrupt the flow of the programme a bit. And then you’ve got the rich kid who protests all the time but doesn’t really make a big difference in the way that he could. In being so self aware as a show it’s sort of lost the point and lost itself. But I would probably watch more, so that’s a win for the studio at least.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 04/09/2021 18:45

Urgh. The acting is worse than the original, the fashion isnt as good and it's just so self conscious. I agree with @Equalpayquery

I miss old GG where the characters were regularly bloody awful to each other and merciless. The only people acting awfully in this are the teachers, who are totally happy to take non consensual images of a 14 year old in her underwear and frame another teacher, thus risking them being fired. .

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 04/09/2021 18:48

I first thought this was the original GG, like how Pretty Little Liars was on iPlayer and on the front page for a while.

I just realised yesterday that it's a new show. I haven't watched yet but I plan to (knowing it's not likely to be as good as the original).

At the start of the original series Blair, Serena, Nate, Chuck, and Dan are 16. (Blair is the first to turn 17, in the episode Seventeen Candles in November of the first season). Dan’s sister Jenny and Serena’s brother Eric are 14 when the series first airs.
Amandasummers · 13/10/2021 14:43

Just washing this. I don’t like it. I loved max in descendants so was looking forward to seeing him in this and although his character is good, he’s not Chuck and that is so clearly who his character is paying homage to.

I don’t like that they’ve tried to copy the original cast somewhat, it makes it impossible not to compare! I’d rather they had used the old cast in their lives now but think I’m in the minority
