The six-part drama from World Productions (Line Of Duty, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Save Me, Bodyguard) stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Martin Compston and Paterson Joseph.

When a crew member is found dead on board the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, police in Scotland are called in to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) must go aboard to begin an investigation. Although the death was written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But when the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.

Vigil
Vigil’s stellar ensemble cast also features Anjli Mohindra, Connor Swindells, Adam James, Gary Lewis, Stephen Dillane, Lolita Chakrabarti, Daniel Portman, Lorne MacFadyen and Lauren Lyle.

The fictional six-part series is written and created by Bafta nominated writer Tom Edge, with episodes by Ed Macdonald and Chandni Lakhani. It is directed by Bafta winner James Strong, and Bafta nominee Isabelle Sieb. Vigil is produced by Angie Daniell, executive produced by Simon Heath and Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, James Strong and Tom Edge.

Vigil
Vigil is set and was filmed in Scotland, and is supported by the National Lottery through Screen Scotland. International distribution is handled by ITV Studios.

Enjoying it but it seems to be one twist after another in very quick succession.

I love Suranne. Local lass who will be forever Karen.

Xiaoxiong · 30/08/2021 22:28

He's Johnson from the Office!

Xiaoxiong · 30/08/2021 22:28

Sorry I meant peep show not the office

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/08/2021 22:31

@butterpuffed

In two minds whether to watch this. Love Martin Compston but cannot stand Suranne Jones.

😂🤣

me too 😱😂

Xiaoxiong · 30/08/2021 22:41

Whoops should have RTFT! You all spotted Johnson ages ago Grin

I loved this, especially watching all the actors chewing up the scenery. I had to watch through my fingers at the submarine nearly colliding with the tanker and losing power and stuff. I watched Das Boot and Hunt for Red October when I was a teen and have been morbidly fascinated with the horrors of submarines ever since. Roll on next Sunday night!

And on subtitles, we tuned in at 9.15pm on Iplayer and they had subtitles going already.

Lottle · 30/08/2021 22:44

I clicked in this panicking someone had died!

AngeloMysterioso · 30/08/2021 22:54

We watched it live with subtitles

TheRebelle · 30/08/2021 23:02

I was thinking that can’t be it, there’s four more episodes to go!

SpindleWhorl · 30/08/2021 23:07

The XO is Mr Balassis from Belgravia. That's where I recognise him from.

SpindleWhorl · 30/08/2021 23:12

If it's poisoning, then why? How? Who ordered it?

Is it domestic terrorism? Foreign interference? Corruption from within the Navy, or MI5?

Yada yada. That could drag out for a while.

I like the Scottish aristocrat woman actor. If she could replace Lily James in, erm, everything, I'd be happy.

franke · 30/08/2021 23:19

I don't find it plausible that nobody noticed he'd been poisoned. The doc was right there giving him CPR but didn't notice all the other stuff like fluids pouring out of his nose (as described by the XO).

TheChosenTwo · 30/08/2021 23:23

Just watching the first episode now so late to the party, originally found out about it after clicking on the thread in chat about chubby submariners this afternoon!
It’s good, other than suranne Jones i don’t recognise anyone other than the captain (I think he’s a captain, white shirt) who looks like he played Neil in that doctor foster programme also featuring suranne Jones.
I’m intrigued as to why her bag wasn’t searched before she got on the submarine!
I was also surprised by how spacious it seems onboard but that’s been cleared up now as ‘just for telly’. My grandad was a submariner but I didn’t see him much growing up which is a shame because I’m sure he would have been a mine of information! And I don’t care about inaccuracies of uniforms, mainly because I don’t understand any of that anyway so nothing sticks out.
Why do none of them shave? Aren’t they allowed razors down there?

SpindleWhorl · 30/08/2021 23:29

Why do none of them shave? Aren’t they allowed razors down there?

I believe the Navy allows its personnel to grow and maintain 'smart' beards, for practical reasons around shaving when at sea? That could be bollocks of course - one of my beardy military DSS told me Grin

TheChosenTwo · 30/08/2021 23:30

Also, I like Suranne Jones!!!

KillingMeDeftly · 30/08/2021 23:32

I'm really enjoying it but Suranne'a eyebrows are very distracting. They almost deserving billing of their own 😆

It's also interesting to do the "who's been in what?" game - I counted 3 Downton alumni, 3 Game of Thrones and 2 Outlander!

TheChosenTwo · 30/08/2021 23:38

Thanks @SpindleWhorl Grin
Just starting the second episode now.
Did the captain really think that the sub was being followed? He gave that reason for not checking out the trawler incident but they had the records to show that it was their sub making the dragging resistance? Have I got that totally wrong 😂

EsmaCannonball · 30/08/2021 23:51

There's a problem with a nuclear reactor, the sub might sink to the bottom of the ocean and you're being tailed by an enemy submarine, but this annoying detective thinks everyone should stop trying to prevent a lethal catastrophe to answer her questions even though it's impossible for any murderer to do a runner. I'd lock her up too. If I were in her position I'd be like, 'Yep, you sort out that nuclear reactor. I'll wait in this corner and keep right out of everyone's way until the nuclear reactor is all nice and mended.'

The beardy Inspector Morse guy is too nice and helpful. Maybe his accent being all over the place is because he's a secret Russian agent. I'd keep him off-guard and suddenly ask him the height of Salisbury Cathedral.

It's one of those dramas where nobody is acting the way anyone would in real life. If I were under suspicion of murder I'd be as bland and unobtrusive as possible, not all arsey and antagonistic and shifty. Why are they all such knobs?

Walkingtheplank · 31/08/2021 01:18

I think Arsenic is green - although seems a bit Agatha Christie as a weapon. But then someone thinking they've killed someone when someone else did it is quite Christie too.

BasiliskStare · 31/08/2021 03:36

I did once meet a submarine captain - me " Das boot" he "very accurate " me the Hunt for Red October " he "not so accurate. " Grin

I think this boat looks bigger inside than it should ( bunks aside )

BasiliskStare · 31/08/2021 03:39

That one possibly for you @Xiaoxiong

mpsw · 31/08/2021 06:10

The Hunt for Red October - read the book, don't go by the film.

Egghead68 · 31/08/2021 06:51

I worry about the cat too.

I think the man in the peace camp is MI5.

I don’t trust the coxswain or the doctor.

KillingMeDeftly · 31/08/2021 07:09

The coxswain seems lovely. Which, no doubt, means he's a Russian spy!

escapeyou · 31/08/2021 07:18

Patterson Joseph was also in Soldier Soldier if you watched that 😊
