Yes, we are fans of this and have bought a car from that dealers and used Pickfords before
I do think that some of the people know that it's a set up of some kind , but told to play along!
It's a good programme though.

Kinraddie · 24/08/2021 08:29

I would love to know if Pickfords gave everyone a pay rise and how much it was!

purpleme12 · 24/08/2021 08:37

I was thinking as soon as I heard pay rise, how much
I mean even a teeny bit would still be a pay rise so you can't judge till you know how much they're being raised by!

I don't usually watch but was interested to see the Pickfords one, as someone in the family just moved and I was helping them review their removal options.

The transformation of the MD of Pickfords worked well, but I am just not buying it. The whole disingenuous act that, gosh he had no idea that Pickfords staff were paid badly, their loyalty going unrecognised after decades of service, on 2 day jobs expected to sleep in the vans with a few thin blankets, etc etc. How he was so worried that they couldn't recruit staff and had no idea why! I call bullshit, as MD he should have known all about the terms and conditions of his workers' employment, and if he didn't make it his business to find out sharpish!

Being a good removals worker obviously involves some skill and care and yet it was said they would be paid more working in a warehouse. Obviously there must often be long hours too and travel, frequently necessitating being apart from their families. All for little more than minimum wage evidently. Amazingly , they can't get the staff!

I was quite surprised as always on house move threads people say how Pickfords charge their customers premium prices, and no doubt sell themselves as providing a superior, professional service. Well why don't they treat their workers like professionals then, and value them accordingly?

I expect the inflated prices just line their shareholders pockets. I think participating in this show was a massive own goal really. I'd certainly now think twice before using Pickfords.

the80sweregreat · 24/08/2021 18:45

Lots of companies use Pickfords to move people. It's probably just because it's the one that they know about and trust and they go anywhere.
I bet a few of the employees choose to live in the vans and just pocket the allowances rather than go into a premier inn or wherever. (Apologies if I am assuming this , but they still did get an allowance to cover their costs)
I agree that min wage for such a specialist job is terrible though and they all deserved a big fat pay rise! It's a tough job and more people these days choose the 'pack and move ' options too as we have so much more stuff to take with us!
I found them brilliant in the past , but I did imagine they earned a much better wage.

Watching Jess' reaction was really lovely and genuine
I felt pleased for her that she got a break
Although I also wondered if she actually wanted a team leader role
I know obviously he said if you want it but I just thought it was a bit weird to suggest a supervising role before discussing it at all

Alan seemed like a really nice person to work for

Alan was old school wasn't he? Fair , but not a push over either
I can't believe he hadn't met the daughters before ? Or seen a photo of them on the bosses desk or something?
Some of these set ups are a bit contrived , but it's a good programme. Shame all the employees didn't get a pay rise though ..

stillcrazyafterall · 31/08/2021 10:33

We were talking about this and said how it must piss off a lot of other staff though. Can you imagine being a valetter (for example) and not being given £10k or a car, or a permanent job simply because the boss doesn't know about you? It would piss me off royally!!

tanguero · 31/08/2021 11:03

There was a similar series some years ago, and Pickfords and its then MD also featured in that. He promised that workers on temporary contracts would be given permanent ones. Plus ca change, plus la meme chose.

Pemba · 31/08/2021 13:12

Indeed. Boo sucks to Pickfords then.
