Oh hurrah. This is one of my favourites. If you liked Mapp and Lucia, Ladies of Letters and appreciate an eye as acute as that of Alan Bennett watch this light satire set in the 1930s. Kate Beckinsale as neat Flora Poste tidies up the rural, doom laden Starkadder family. Rufus Sewell broods in his best manly way throughout. Excellent production, great cast. A treat.

caught it last night - only wish it was longer!

silkmonkey · 23/07/2021 21:19

Thanks for the heads up!

MartyHart · 23/07/2021 21:22

Watched it this morning. Love it!

ImperfectTents · 23/07/2021 21:22

Something narsty in the woodshed

Starjammer · 23/07/2021 21:25

Oh brilliant, this is one of my faves and not seen it in a few years! A treat for tomorrow I think Grin

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 23/07/2021 21:28

Ooh yes

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/07/2021 21:29

I've just watched it. CCF is one of my favourite books. The film was very faithful to it. There was also a BBC serialisation many years ago (70s?) with Alastair Sim as Amos which I loved.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/07/2021 21:30

I've just checked and it was 1968!!!

The BBC serialisation’s on YouTube. I knew Seth looked vaguely familiar & finally recognised a very young Peter Egan!
MartyHart · 23/07/2021 21:33

Rufus Sewell Grin

SingToTheSky · 23/07/2021 21:34

Ooh! I should read the book first shouldn’t I? It’s on my list

YesThisIsMe · 23/07/2021 21:38

I was flicking through the channels and caught the last fifteen minutes (just from Seth’s departure to Hollywood) and forced the family to watch the denouement while giving them a potted summary of the plot up to then. It’s perfect.

Gatekeeper · 23/07/2021 21:41

Lovely! I shall watch tomorrow with a glass of wine and bag of crisps and just wallow in the splendidness of it

imjustanerd · 23/07/2021 21:43

Excellent, I absolutely love this adaptation, such a great cast I'll certainly be watching thanks op.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/07/2021 21:53

The BBC serialisation’s on YouTube Thank you I'll watch that.

longwayoff · 23/07/2021 22:02

Thanks Captain, I still recall bits of the 1968 version and I fell in love with it. Will definitely re-watch on YouTube after all these years.

So nice to see Kate Beckinsale as a seriously good actress, before she became a glamorous Hollywood Barbie.

TheMarzipanDildo · 23/07/2021 22:53

Just watched it inspired by this thread. What a brilliant film!

YesThisIsMe · 23/07/2021 23:14

Oh don’t be mean about Kate! I really like the fact that this English rose became a random action movie star and spent her thirties and forties kicking ass in a leather catsuit as the lead in a vampire/werewolf action movie series. Not the sidekick, not the love interest, the actual series lead. You’ve got to respect the work ethic.

WhatTimeDoYouCallThis · 23/07/2021 23:36

Wonderful, just watched. Thanks for the heads-up!

Clawdy · 24/07/2021 07:54

She also left the lovely Michael Sheen for Len Wiseman, so I can't forgive her! Grin

YesThisIsMe · 24/07/2021 08:04

I think if Michael’s forgiven her then you should be able to. I love MS, but if he’d wanted to be with her forever then maybe he should have proposed.
