TV series - what to watch next? Historical dramas are my favourite!

I have Netflix and amazon prime and looking for suggestions on what to watch next.
I love historical dramas, my favourites being The Last Kingdom (have watched this 2 maybe 3 times), Vikings, The Tudors, Downton Abbey and all of those Phillipa Gregory books they made series of. Any suggestions?

There's a two part mini series of Kate Mosse's Labyrinth, dual time periods, modern day and 13th century Carcassone, it is very good.

I am also a huge Last Kingdom fan, best thing that's ever been on tv IMO, I've lost count of how many times I've watched all four seasons. Some bittersweet news, they've finished filming S5, but this is to be the last one 😢

Britannia is another one, though I've only watched one episode, maybe I should give it another go, but I found the modern language (Mum, Dad etc) too jarring. Or Domina? I've still to try that one, Ancient Rome isn't my thing, prefer Saxon/Viking/Medieval eras, but might be worth a go.

I love Vikings too, I still have Seasons 5 and 6 to watch.

I enjoyed the Philippa Gregory adaptions too, The Spanish Princess was superb.

I suppose it depends on what you mean by historical. I enjoyed The Last Post, now on Netflix. It's set in the 1960s as Britain prepares to pull out of Aden (now Yemen) The rather lovely Jessie Buckley is in it.

Have you watched Outlander?

World on Fire is also good.

Notonthestairs · 23/06/2021 16:17

Medici on Netflix.
I've had The Great (Ch 4 I think) and Versailles recommended but I haven't watched yet.

@clarrylove oh yes love outlander, have watched that twice too. Wish they'd go back to Scotland and give him a kilt again though.

@zukiecat thanks for those will take a look. Agree it's definitely the best show out there I feel, I'm currently on book 4 or 5 I think, I think they're probably stopping at season 5 so they don't have to age the beautiful Uhtred! I had a look at Barbarian on Netflix, ancient Rome but set in Germany with the warring tribes, have you seen that? Good luck with vikings, last season so worth the weirdness of a few of the middle seasons.

@Notonthestairs I tried The Great but couldn't get into it, I did only try one episode so maybe I'll try it get again as find Russian history really interesting.

@midsomermurderess that sounds good will add it to my list on Netflix thank you. I recently watched a series called Rebellion or something about bloody Sunday and the IRA, you might quite like it, think there were 2 series with different names (want to say the other was revolution), early 20th century

I love The Last Kingdom too. What about Poldark?

MrsJackRackham · 26/06/2021 22:38

Black Sails is fab, all about pirates in Nassau. It weaves in the real life pirate stories with the plot. Amazon prime.
Gentleman Jack on iPlayer. True story of Anne Lister, what a fucking woman. Love her 😍

ArialAnna · 26/06/2021 23:09

I'm a big fan of historical drama too. I must check out Labyrinth @zukiecat

I'd second Gentleman Jack. Indian Summers on All 4 is also very good. I also really liked Harlots.

Do you enjoy regency dramas? Lots of those to binge - Bridgerton, Sanditon, Belgravia
