If I loved Outlander

EnfieldRes · 14/06/2021 21:24

and still can't stop thinking about it months after I finished Outlander ... what else would I like?

I love the drama, the romance, the history, set in Scotland. Also loved the American bit and the historical element of their arrival in the 'new world'.

Would be grateful for any recommendations from those who enjoyed it too.

I preferred the last kingdom but also enjoyed outlander.

SendARavenToRiverRun · 14/06/2021 21:41

I loved Outlander and I really loved The Last Kingdom.

EnfieldRes · 14/06/2021 22:17

I will have to watch it Smile

Watch Outlander again - off you go back through the stones to Castle Leoch and Lallybroch.

Failing that:
Another vote for The Last Kingdom. I also liked Vikings.

Versailles might also fill the bill (prince Philippe from it is going to be in the next series of Outlander)

I often see Poldark and Jamestown mentioned on "if I liked Outlander..." forums

Outlander is great - nothing matches its bonkers, brilliance and wonderful clothes.

Mummaminnie · 15/06/2021 14:00

I would recommend Poldark if you haven't watched it.

Maggiesgirl · 15/06/2021 14:15

Another for the Last Kingdom ( and that is from someone that has watch - and read - Outlander more times than I will admit. DDIL may bring about an intervention if she knew just how many 😂

slalomsuki · 15/06/2021 15:04

Another vote for Jamestown here as it made me read about the first settlers and their history.

Turn on Amazon was good and set about the same sort of time as Outlander with the run up to the American Civil War and George Washington's spy ring. The characters are factual and loads of British actors in it.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I will start with the Last Kingdom.
Might have seen Jamestown already (a film? Something about Pocahontas?)

No Jamestown TV series. Sophie Rundle (peaky blinders, gentleman jack) Stuart Martin, Naomi Batterick Niamh Walsh its really good.

SapatSea · 18/06/2021 11:59

Grin Maggiesgirl nothing wrong with being an Obsessassenach.

MoChridhe · 18/06/2021 12:23

The last kingdom is good. I recently watched the Spanish Princess on starz play and I like it. When I read the Outlander books I imagine William looks like the lead actor in the Spanish Princess.

Also recommend Men in kilts for light heatrted relief in seeing Jamie and Dougal in modern times.

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 18/06/2021 12:36

Definitely The Last Kingdom, and Versailles.

You could try The White Queen and The White Princess too, made by the same people who do The Spanish Princess.

Mrhwbin · 25/07/2021 17:24

God I love Outlander soooooo much. I just start from the beginning and watch it all over again. Or I just watch my favourite scenes back to back.

When my family stage an intervention to make me stop watching Ive enjoyed The Last Kingdom.

I cannot wait to see who they cast as William in Outlander. He has to look like Jamie or it will be a Tom Cruise / Reacher travesty again.

Is it just me that only fancies Jamie but not Sam?

Mrhwbin · 25/07/2021 17:27

And I read the books over again. And Ive started to read Outlander fan fiction as well which is a whole new world of madness

MayflowerMaisie · 25/07/2021 17:36

@Mrhwbin - same here!
I can gaze at pictures of Jamie all day - I absolutely do not have a Pinterest board for this purpose.
Sam, can take or leave.
Though if he propositioned me, I might say yes.

Flamingo49 · 25/07/2021 17:37

I loved Jamestown, it also has an INCREDIBLY attractive male character in it that I spent the whole series perving over.

Mrhwbin · 25/07/2021 17:43

@MayflowerMaisie A work friend and I often swap Jamie pics to brighten a dull day at work.

I guess I wouldn't kick Sam out of bed for farting but I might have to insist he did Jamies voice if nothing else

Lessstressedhemum · 25/07/2021 21:56

I LOVE Outlander. I have watched it all loads of times and can't wait for season 6.

I also like -
Black Sails,
The Last Kingdom
Medici
Versailles
Salem (utterly bonkers)
Lucifer for something totally different but still fabulous.

blibblibs · 25/07/2021 22:05

Just rewatch outlander, nothing else can match it, although DH has made me watch Black Sails, Vikings & Last Kingdom which are all good.
And agree regarding Jamie but not really into Sam. Payed for the starz app to watch Clanlands but haven't bothered to finish it yet.

breadwidow · 27/07/2021 21:45

Following. I love outlander, especially season 1. Tried last kingdom when I needed a substitute and wasn't that enthralled - seemed a bit slow. Does it get better. I watched poldark before outlander but agree that is a similar vibe though far more tame on the sex front & frankly I've not found anything that compares in that regard Blush. To be honest so far I have not found anything that really matches up to it, so my other (less obsessive but still v enjoyable) binge watches have been vastly different

ISeeTheLight · 27/07/2021 21:47

You may enjoy the Medici and A Discovery of Witches.

MoChridhe · 28/07/2021 08:58

Oh just remembered the Borgias. It's very good, I watched it two times before Outlander and I was looking for a new obsession when someone recommended Outlander.

scrambledcustard · 28/07/2021 09:02

I enjoyed Outlander. I used to watch it in my lunch time with my sandwich and cup of tea. I was sat their one lunch when the awful rape scene in the prison happened. I dont understand why they had to be so graphic tbh. Really put me of my sarnie and made me feel disturbed for the rest of the day.

Gothichouse40 · 28/07/2021 09:06

Poldark and Jamestown were really very good series. I also liked Ripper Street, but that was quite a dark series, so perhaps not for everyone. One historical series that was excellent was Pillars of the Earth.
