Its probably had terrible reviews but Im loving it. The clothes are fab and Ewan McGregor is fab in the part it took me awhile to recognise him.

I binged it today. The script was dire but the atmosphere was fabulous. I loved the actress who played Liza Minnelli.
I loved the clothes and the tantrums and all the awful excess.

EachandEveryone · 15/05/2021 21:32

Three episodes have flown by I have to stop😃

I really enjoyed it. Unlike a lot of other Ryan P Murphy stuff it was just the right length. A lot of productions where he's involved tend to start off great then sag in the middle but 5 episodes was just about right.

Thought Ewan MacGregor was great but I'm going to disagree about Liza. I don't think the actress embodied her at all.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 16/05/2021 09:28

Am enjoying it I must admit!

supercee · 16/05/2021 09:29

I've watched the first episode and I'm not sure. I think Ewan McGregor is just Ewan McGregor in everything he's done, including this, apart from Trainspotting and have to agree with PP, the actress playing Liza M just didn't do it for me.

Not sure if I'll continue.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/05/2021 10:32

I watched it and enjoyed it It just reminded me again of all the people (but particularly gay men) cut down in their prime by AIDS in the 80s/early 90s. I didn't think the actress playing Liza Minnelli nailed it at all.

SionnachGlic · 17/05/2021 08:02

I liked it...I knew the name Halston but not the story...so it was interesting & I loved the creation of his image & ego fueled by the drugs & followers. As soon as Victor appeared, you could feel the downfall looming... does every massively famous person have an opportunistic friend (or lover) in the wings just waiting to do them harm? It would be so hard to be famous...altho the house in Montauk would make up for it...

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 17/05/2021 08:09

Maybe it's that the drug-taking and 'becoming out of control' leaves such talented (but also flawed) individuals ripe for exploitation? All very sad. I couldn't believe that Victor still thought they had something to salvage after getting all of that money out of Halston.

jay55 · 17/05/2021 08:39

Yes with the great talent, excess, bad contracts, exploitative partners there were so many common elements with Elton John's Rocketman.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 17/05/2021 08:48

I totally agree @jay55. Particularly noticeable having watched both within the past week. Elton John must thank his lucky stars he's still here to tell the tale though.

Like George Michaels exes😞

I am a couple of episodes in and not sure if I should persevere. Ewan is great, I think, but I am tired of Victor and his tantrums already. I find all the creative decisions in running a fashion empire very interesting. Reminds me of Pierre Cardin who licensed his name away until it became worthless.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 17/05/2021 19:07

Yes, @EachandEveryone, all so sad. And to think that these men all had/have so much to offer and give a partner and yet got saddled with chancers who seem to have only been after money and the lifestyle

EachandEveryone · 18/05/2021 14:56

I adored it. It was so lovely to hear the Cocteau Twins at the end took me right back. I hope this brings some renewed interest and maybe some royalties their way.

Halston Heritage is still a label. Lots of fab frocks for a glam night out.

MaMaLa321 · 19/05/2021 17:21

I must admit I'm loving it (though again, I don't think Liza Minelli is quite right).
I just love the look of it, even the marvellous font in the credits.
I loved the section where he creates a perfume, and I can't believe that I can't remember Halston perfume at all, when I was an adolescent back then.
And, I thought the bit at the end of episode 3 was so good - Halston comes into Studio 54 and sees, across the room, Victor having sex with someone. Victor, at the same time, sees him.
Their expressions pass from shock, to guilt, to joyous acceptance, without anything being said. Brilliant.

Thatswhatmamasaid · 19/05/2021 17:34

I finished watching the series and I have to say, it was fabulous! Ewan McGregor was fantastic. There's something different about his face and I can't quite put my finger on it... Botox and fillers maybe?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 19/05/2021 17:40

I was curious about Halston perfume (there seems to be a version available to buy now but in a naff mockery of the lovely glass 'carafe'). But clearly it's not the same so I'll just have to remain curious!

Studio 54 must have been an insane place to be – have you seen the pictures of a young teenage Brooke Shields there (safeguarding alert surely?)?

I'm glad it ended when it did.

MaMaLa321 · 19/05/2021 17:58

I think that EM was wearing a prosthetic nose, and contact lenses.

I read an interesting article about Halston, from someone who was also around at the time. He felt Halston's problem was (apart from insane drug use, of coure) that he had no interest in his clients, but instead surrounded himself with parasites.

Also, he said that they were very boring, being too drugged up to have a conversation or dance.

MaMaLa321 · 19/05/2021 18:00

There's a film called 54, about Studio 54, starring Michael Myers and Ryan Phillipe, I'm going to see if it's on netflix.

Cocolapew · 19/05/2021 18:03

I'm looking forward to starting this, I'm going to wear my 'halston gucci fiorucci' t shirt while watching it Grin

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/05/2021 07:00

Oh, I'll look out for that @MaMaLa321. Although I have just watched Ryan Phillipe in 'Shooter' on Netflix so may have trouble getting his Bobby Lee persona out of my head!

Orpheline · 20/05/2021 08:34

The 2019 Halston film is on Prime. That's good.
I have always had the perfume, since the 80's.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/05/2021 11:54

So Orpheline do you reckon it's the same now as then? And where do you buy it as a reliable source?

frogswimming · 20/05/2021 12:37

The studio 54 film wasn't very good I thought. I enjoyed halston though. You did notice the studio 54 scenes were filmed in covid though, it's so empty, it's like five people running behind the camera and appearing again at the other end. I thought Liza and euan v good. And Elsa Peretti. Might get a coffee bean necklace or a bone cuff for Christmas!
