'Benidorm'

Watching repeats of this on Netflix because I absolutely love it. A character in the episode I'm watching is called Beverley Westwood. I thought, that's a strange name, because I went to a secondary school in Beverley and Beverley Westwood was a common nearby, which was great for rolypolys and tobogganing. Went online and see that Darren Litten is from Hull. I love that he's given that name to one of his characters. He seems to have retreated from television, which I think is a real shame. I'll never get tired of 'Benidorm'.

Absolutely love Benidorm!

BikeRunSki · 08/05/2021 23:10

I noticed that about Beverly Westwood too.

I used to work in East Yorks.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 08/05/2021 23:16

I love Benidorm - well, the first five series (I think it was), the last lost a lot of it's bite.

RoseBearx · 08/05/2021 23:32

Love Benidorm. The programme actually means a lot to me, I know that sounds ridiculous, but it’s just such a great escape programme. It’s got such a nostalgic feeling to it and reminds me of my childhood holidays in similar places, I find it to be a really homely show. I also bloody love Siobhan Finneran in everything she is in. I could watch her all day in any character. She made Benidorm IMO.

CoffeeRunner · 08/05/2021 23:34

I love Benidorm too.

Especially the earlier series. It all got slightly weird with the Mel & Madge gangster storyline.

Benidorm is great and never fails to lighten the mood. My teens love it too and have watched the complete re runs on netflix and then have started from the beggining again!
I went to see the live show a couple of years ago too and it was hilarious.

I've started rewarding too.
On series 3 now!
It all went downhill when they got rid of the Garveys.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/05/2021 08:30

It did user.

The Garveys were key.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/05/2021 11:40

Darren Littern did another series called Scarborough. I love his style of comedy.

I think he was trolled over the last few series of Benidorm. I loved them all. It’s something which always makes me laugh.

Don’t know if he has any plans to continue with Scarborough. The first series was so good.

LondonWFuck · 09/05/2021 11:42

I used to love Benidorm! Altho the last few series were a bit naff. Agree that the Garveys are an essential component.

Might stick an old episode on now in fact

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/05/2021 12:26

The first series is really good. The Solarna looks so run down and grim. It’s excellent!!

Scarborough was great but I remember reading that it wasn't a hit and a second series hadn't been commissioned.
FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 09/05/2021 19:06

Benidorm has one of the best lines all all British comedy:
"You're a dickhead!"
"You can't talk to me like that, my father fell in Normandy"
"I don't care if he went arse over tit in Scunthorpe, you're a dickhead"

😂😂😂😂

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 09/05/2021 19:07

But yes when the Garvey's left I watched for a couple of episodes then stopped. They made the show

Morgan12 · 09/05/2021 19:24

I wonder why they left. It wasn't the same after that tbh. Although I did love Liam and Kenneth.

LarsErickssong · 09/05/2021 19:28

The first few series are our go to on Netflix if we want some 'comfort tv' on whilst we are doing other things.

itsnotmeitsu · 09/05/2021 20:26

@Pinkmagic1 > I saw the live show at a theatre in Leeds a couple of years ago. It was a bit surreal to see some of the characters that I loved from the show in front of me. It happened that it coincided with a period when I really needed something to take me away for a while from what was happening in real life. I could watch this programme over and over again, and currently are doing so on Netflix.

What made the theatre trip even more surreal was that the two sisters from Leeds who feature in Gogglebox (which I also love) were in the bar waiting, like us, for the show to start. I had a quick word to chat about the love for Italian Greyhounds (the reason I was grieving and needed Benidorm).

It's a bit weird to see that several messages have been deleted on this thread by MNHQ. I can't guess what they would be about as it's a pretty innocous thread.

Yes, I can’t imagine why so many messages are deleted. There’s been alot today I’ve noticed.

Shame Scarborough wasn’t a hit, I loved it.

TangledUp789 · 09/05/2021 21:16

I love the first four series in particular. It lost some of it's charm for me when Sherrie Hewson joined and when the show started focusing more on the staff than the holidaymakers. Still, there's some good bits in the later series, like the Dyke family and that episode where Geoff and Noreen get stuck in the lift. I know everyone loves the Garveys (and I think they're great too), but the Maltbys are my favourite characters.

I struggle watching series eight to ten though, because I don't like a single member of the Dawson family, and they're so prominent throughout.

My favourite moment of the show is when Noreen thinks Geoff is gay, and organises a performance of YMCA for his 'coming out party' Grin

Overdueanamechange · 10/05/2021 20:36

The earlier Benidorms were brilliant. The Mateo and "Squirrel" dance off was genius.
