A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking, but we don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, which gets in the way of the drama. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us. Quite a few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:

FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead

ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the bum to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but explained or with an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Park Min Young (PMY), Kim Jae Wook (KJW). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in…

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 17/05/2021 19:34

I’ll PM the spreadsheet link to you now Rowdy. Give me 5.
Would I be able to have a link to the spreadsheet?

Currently watching bring it on ghost which is so far best described as lightweight (apart from the murders) nonsense with some massive internal logic holes but we say watching

boatyardblues · 17/05/2021 19:49

@FedUpWithBriiiiick

76% *@boatyardblues*!!
Toot toot!!!

I have a Zoom catch-up with an old friend shortly. All being well it should be done by the time I’m off the call. 🤞

Hydrogen - I’ll send you the link now.

There's a lot of things I'm prepared to suspend my disbelief for in KDrama but Professor Yang's jigsaw solving technique in Law School takes the biscuit. He appears to be able to fill it in perfectly from the edges inwards leaving a central hole while keeping all his loose bits in a pile and just picking up one at random and then finding the spot for it. Shocker.

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 17/05/2021 20:48

@LarryUnderwood a weverse account!! There's no chance of escape now! What books did you get? I'm still v v slowly trudging through Duolingo.

Hi @Lottahugz 👋

This thread is great ❤️

Hi Lotta!

I am back into low stakes cdrama nerd poppetry as I have picked up My Little Happiness again whilst I wait for DAYS but I have remembered why I stopped watching live, it is soooo low stakes it is practically in negative numbers and so sweet my teeth itch 🍭

He is the jigsaw master! I need him to come and finish the puzzle we've had under the table cloth since Christmas as it's too bloody hard. Sadly it's not of an elephant, so I don't think he'll be interested 🐘😂
FedUpWithBriiiiick · 17/05/2021 21:42

It's Doom time, lads! 💃💃💃

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 17/05/2021 22:05

I'm getting FOMO about Doom so I'm going to start that now, even though I'm not up to date with SYHH (which I'm enjoying a lot)

Oh it's good. There's only 3 eps up so plenty of time to catch up with SYHH 👍
hawthornknitter · 17/05/2021 22:46

Love the essay polkettle, it all rings so true. You're very talented.

Watched Train to Busan at the weekend with DH and teens. We all loved it. I do love a good zombie film and this was excellent.

Started Hospital Playlist but think I'm going to have to watch the first episode again to bed them all in, so to speak

boatyardblues · 17/05/2021 23:15

Oh my! Doom was great this evening. PBY can really bring the inner steel when she needs to. SIG’s character is looking a touch outmanoeuvered by pocket-sized dynamo PBY’s. It’s a while since I saw her in anything and I’d forgotten just how good she is. I looked them both up last night & didn’t realise she is 2 years younger than SIG IRL. For some reason I had him pegged as younger. They make a cute pairing in this. I am absolutely gripped already. Star

Is she god, Boaty? I had her pegged for a lower deity.
sakura06 · 18/05/2021 08:06

If anyone cracks the return to reading, I'd love to hear about your tactics! I'm finding binging a drama so much like reading a novel, that I'm not even missing it. 😳

Ended up a bit conflicted about Vincenzo. I couldn't really handle the evil. On balance, I think I liked it.

Currently watching 'Good Morning Call' (J drama) as DH has seen it before and grew up in Japan. It's very sweet. Not quite the same production values as the Korean dramas I've seen though!

LarryUnderwood · 18/05/2021 08:17

@TheGirlWithTheArabStrap I got Korean for Beginners, fundamental writing practice book and Let's Study Korean grammar vocab workbook. Arriving today so I'll see what they're like. If I enjoy it I may book some Skype lessons too. I started duolingo a few days ago but I find learning new alphabets only works for me if I drill it through practicing writing and stroke order. When I studied Japanese that was what helped me anyway. Once it's embedded that way then an audiovisual thing like duolingo works for me, but I find it really hard to actually make the connection between sound and character without physically writing it.
