My mum used to do nights in Tesco, or a motorway services when I was small and she and dad were skint.
But there were no tax credits back then and dad had no complaints about looking after us both.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/04/2021 08:45

Exactly @jay55. As no other money she worked when she could

Most of the families are poor by choice. They massively overspend but the mum chooses not to work. I can't recall any of the poor families recently where both of the parents work FT.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/04/2021 17:38

Been a few couples where both work but rare

@Blondeshavemorefun

I honestly think some people just don’t want to work

Esp if get rent paid for other ways

Often on rhph they have a couple who have young children so mum
Doesn’t work

As childcare costs too much

I get that

But

Why can’t the mum work a few evenings /nights as cleaner for offices or in a shop

My friend did that. Think was 7-12 and 6-1 - 2 nights a week for think 4/5yrs while kids small

Sometimes you just can't if it doesn't fit with the job your DH does - my friend couldn't go back to her original job due to an hour and a half commute and the expectation of lots of ad hoc out of hours hours work to visit sites all over the country n- no nursery would have entertained ad hoc till 8pm, or before 6am starts. However her DH also worked a job that had ad hoc overtime (which paid well) but meant she couldn't ever rely on him being home by 6 or 7pm, or not having to work over a weekend.
Blondeshavemorefun · 27/04/2021 13:50

Yes I get that @Ariest

But the families shown on here rarely have well paid jobs , nor do ad hoc

So the wives could get a part time evening job to earn extra money , if they are struggling, which they are
