Has anyone else watched this? I thought it was great and really thought provoking. Such an interesting story.

I watched this, really enjoyed the insight into a religion/culture I know nothing of. A great offering from Netflix in amongst so much rubbish!

PolarnOPirate · 23/03/2021 18:13

Yes!! Although a while ago so it’s not fresh in my mind. I certainly binged it!!!

Crakeandoryx · 23/03/2021 18:16

Loved it! Thought it was well done, respectful and really sensitivitly covered.

jjejj · 23/03/2021 20:49

I watched the making of it short documentary as well. I thought it was so brilliantly done and so powerful with the links between Germany and the holocaust and modern life/past traumas.

I watched it a while ago, and then read the book. Both are brilliant (and differ somewhat!)

I wish I had read the book first tbh but I'm definitely going to buy it and read it as it's such an interesting culture.

yes first thing i watched when i got NF,have always been interested in this religion especially the Haredi wish there was more to watch like this

Cissyandflora · 23/03/2021 21:12

Yes I watched it when I was in a quarantine hotel in Sydney. One of the health care workers recommended it to me. I normally don’t watch many dramas. It was very good and I sometimes think about it still.

Soontobe60 · 23/03/2021 21:12

I watched it - made me cry.

Yes the documentary was great. I’d forgotten about that.
mymymy0 · 23/03/2021 21:19

Is this subtitled?

TheMarzipanDildo · 23/03/2021 21:19

I thought it was great too- might buy the book now!

LarsErickssong · 23/03/2021 22:11

Yes absolutely loved it, it was fascinating! There was a thread on here when it was first released and a lot of people recommended a similar programme which I've been meaning to watch but not got round to, I think it might be called Schtisel.

ursuslemonade · 23/03/2021 22:24

Op give Shtisel a go (also on Netflix) I really recommend it.

StillWeRise · 23/03/2021 22:31

I thought it was good too. She said something in it that I don't remember hearing before, about how the ultra orthodox have large familes because they are 'replacing the 6m who were killed'. It was based on a memoir, wasn't it, does anyone know if the author really was accepted at the conservatoire, did she make a career as a musician?
will check out Schtisel.

waterlane · 23/03/2021 22:33

Loved this. Learnt so much about the religion and culture. One of the best things we've watched

Habbyhadno · 23/03/2021 22:37

I watched this a while ago and loved it. Also recommend Shtizel, it's very good and really funny in places (and has the same girl who was the lead in Unorthodox in it)

Ikeameatballs · 23/03/2021 22:49

We loved it.

I’ve not read the memoir it’s (very loosely) based on, but from what I gather, the entire Berlin and music part is fiction — while the part of the mini-series that takes place in NY is factual, in reality Deborah Feldman and her husband moved out of NYC to another Orthodox community, she started attending university, had a bad car crash, and decided she wanted a divorce. I think they already had a child by the time she left.
StillWeRise · 23/03/2021 23:02

thanks

BikeRunSki · 23/03/2021 23:07

@mymymy0

Is this subtitled?
The parts in Yiddish and German are, yes
BikeRunSki · 23/03/2021 23:10

I binged this this last weekend too. I found it fascinating. Very short though. It felt that some more loose ends could have been tied up.

Crowsaregreat · 23/03/2021 23:12

Another vote for Shtisel.

MyBeloved · 23/03/2021 23:27

It was very well done and sensitively portrayed.
