I was sceptical but DS though we should give it a shot. BBC. I'm rather taken with it. Partly historical ship stuff - a bit spooky ( that's the part I am less keen on ) - Actually we are really enjoying it.

Well - not everyone's cup of tea but if you are are short of something to watch and can get on catchup etc- worth a go IMHO.

Weirdly I am watching it right now!

BasiliskStare · 11/03/2021 03:45

@HappySewandSew - be interested in what you think when you've got through it - we are enjoying it - well I am watching another episode because insomnia - but I do think it's worth a candle. I had never heard of it but DS had. Pretty good cast though I think . All best

I think it's really interesting so far. I like that it's part historical and part complete speculation and yes, that cast is good. It's pretty terrifying, the thought of being out there like that. I'm only on episode 1.

Doodledoop · 11/03/2021 03:56

Its nice to look at - but we have found it very, very slow. A tad boring. Possibly my concentration's shot. We've watched 3 episodes, perhaps it picks up pace a bit.

Maybe watching people stuck in a featureless white landscape is too on the nose for me in s lockdown.

BasiliskStare · 11/03/2021 05:34

@Doodledoop Grin or some people have it worse Grin Flowers

All best to you Doodledoop

Not sure if Dr Who is your thing but gave me a smile recently - DS found it - if you do find it funny possibly an antidote to relentlessly white / snow / lockdown stuff - sorry if doesn't appeal

We've just finished it.
Found it scary, horrifying and parts of it incredibly sad.
The "thing" stalking them looked like a badly made monster from pre CGI days, but the atmospheric sound effects, creepy fog and threat made it much more scarey (I'm a wuss at horror films lol).

JoyOrbison · 11/03/2021 07:02

Half way through it and love it! Also have a soft spot for Ciaron Hines so even better Grin

BasiliskStare · 11/03/2021 07:27

So worth sticking with ? Thank you @cherrytree63 and @JoyOrbison

cherrytree63 · 11/03/2021 13:04

Definitely, I'm still a bit emotional but I'm a saddo lol.

BasiliskStare · 11/03/2021 13:41

Ah I bet not @cherrytree63 Ds & I are going to give it a couple more goes so we will be more saddo than you ( prepared to bet Flowers Ach I reckon it looks like it could OK - & as per previously a great cast

We just finished binging this and really enjoyed it. Bit gruesome in bits for me and I hid behind my fingers cos Im a wuss these days.Grin

I've fallen into a black hole on Wikipedia afterwards looking into the real story and the people involved. Such a fascinating time of exploration.

BasiliskStare · 11/03/2021 14:29

@Breathmiller Now hang on - you do realise that not only will I have to get though more episodes but check Wikipedia as well. I do have DS here who isn't bad at history but .... but ....Grin ( up to about 5 thus far ) ( episodes , not DS s , in my case ) Grin

We've seen episodes 1-3 but will probably give up. Waaaay too slow and I don't understand the flashbacks - or forwards?

Jjjjjj1981 · 11/03/2021 16:11

I found I didn’t get into it til about half way through then absolutely loved it. It’s a grower I reckon.
Bit gory in places though.

There's an existing thread on this here. I made sure the word Terror was in the title so that when using the search function it would be easy to find! www.mumsnet.com/Talk/telly_addicts/4182089-The-Terror-BBC2-starts-tuesday-3-March-2021-thriller-with-starry-cast-week-by-week-no-spoilers-please

Sojo88 · 11/03/2021 20:27

@Wearywithteens I agree - it's been referred to as an "American series" but it's British actors, set at sea with a very British feel to it...why is it an American programme except they had it to watch first?!

I have one episode left to watch. Really enjoying it, great cast but it can be a little confusing sometimes. Also there's so many characters and, especially at the start when they're wearing lots of clothing round their faces, it's kind of hard to tell them apart and to know who's who when hearing names! Gets easier as it goes on though so think it would be clearer if I watch it again.

BasiliskStare · 11/03/2021 21:12

@stumblein - Ah sorry - I did not see this so sorry for new post - I'm going to keep going - as you say - great cast

Thank you all Flowers

In fact I think there was another one - but cant find it now. So wasn't meaning to be sort of telling you off, but wanted to get those of us watching all in one place!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/03/2021 07:54

I think it's not American at all (possibly with the exception of funding)? You couldn't get more of a British story really!

I started it, then stopped in the second episode as it just seemed so grim. However, took up watching it again and glad that I did, although it is beyond bleak.

I agree though that the cast was so large, that it was impossible to get a real handle on all the characters. I found Crozier a flawed but very honourable man and a much better leader than Franklin. Loved Goodsir and Mr Blanky too. Hickey was a deeply unpleasant man but very canny and good at reading people and worming his way into a position of power.

Loved the quiet fortitude of Lady Silence and the supernatural Tuunbaq (which reminded me of Voldermort/Nagini in a strange way).

Random63638 · 16/03/2021 08:00

If you want to story behind the expedition I can highly recommend Erebus by Michael Palin. There's a lot of back story and fewer mythical bears but it is fascinating all the same. The boats were discovered a few years ago and there may still be more to learn about what actually happened.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/03/2021 08:15

We have a copy at home @Random63638 but not yet read it.
