This is Us, S1/2. WTF is going on with Toby??

I know I'm late to this. I've just finished season1, moving on to season 2. Is Toby supposed to be so ........unlikable? I struggle to watch him. Ugh.

I don't want to give you any spoilers cos not sure where you have watched to. But Toby's childhood is really fucked up. He has mental health issues that he needs help for eg a good therapist. I do think it's odd how Toby with the awful upbringing isn't allowed to talk about it, but the triplets with their almost perfect family do nothing but talk about their childhood and wallow in it, and make no space for anyone else. There are however a few instances in series 2 & 3 that do make me go "really Toby?!"

Oh bugger. I'm just on episide3, S2. He just reacts oddly which I suppose is understandable then.

I love the show but do find the triplets rather toxic and wish more people would call them out on their behaviour. And I feel for people like Toby and Madison and Beth and Manuel who get caught up in it all. Suprised they can even breathe.

In the first 2 or 3 seasons none of the guys are that likeable. The nicest one is William - and he abandoned his child at a fire station!

I found Toby was really suffocating - Kate goes to fat camp and he has to follow her there.
Kate is trying to lose weight on the treadmill but Toby is there complaining she's not eating a muffin he made - sod off Toby!

I think It's just the way he responds to things, but then I'm.not getting a good sense of time in this, it felt like they'd only been together a short time. A few more episodes into season 2 and I'm warming to him a bit more.

I'm just into season 2 as well and boy I can't stand him, he's sooooooo irritating! To be honest I find most of them quite frustrating in some way or another but I guess that's the point of the show. But yes Toby is really annoying so far.

I'm up to date with the series & still not a Toby fan.

He's supposed to be the 'man of big gestures' or something. But all his big romantic gestures are 'look at me, look at me'.
He's the type of guy I could imagine: girlfriend decides to get fit and run a marathon. As she crosses the finish line, he proposes on one knee. So now the memory isn't the day she achieved her goal - it's the day he proposed in front of all those people.
Prick.
