Disney Plus being a bit scammy with the cancellation clause

So, I wanted to watch a particular film, and googling indicated that it was on Disney Plus, as well as paid youtube. I thought I might as well sign up for a month of Disney Plus so created an account, where it said that I could cancel within 14 days as long as I hadn't streamed any content.

I paid, was logged in automatically, the film I wanted doesn't exist on Disney Plus UK despite what it said on various other sites, and so I cancelled immediately, without clicking on any of the other Disney Plus content. But hold! There's a clause which said by creating an account you have automatically streamed, so you can't in fact cancel without paying a month's subscription.

I mean, I've only lost £5.99, and I am probably going to burn out my eyeballs in the next month watching ALL THE THINGS before my brief subscription expires, because I might as well, but isn't it a weaselly way for Disney to get around UK consumer law?

Did Disney Plus U.K. ever claim the the film you wanted was available, or was it just on third party sites you saw it?

MutteringDarkly · 19/02/2021 13:19

That's a pain - but thank you for the reminder I have been meaning to cancel our subscription that we took out just to watch one film...over 6 months later we might have watched one other thing, so it turned out to be um, 18 pounds per item I guess. Less than a family cinema trip but still glad of the reminder to get on and cancel it!

They did! I googled for the UK site, and it claimed it was on, but I think it maybe just defaults to the US. In any case, once logged in, I can't find it on the UK site.

@ArcheryAnnie That’s such a pain. Hopefully you’ll find some other things to watch over the next couple of weeks to justify your payment before cancelling.

JustAPassingFashion · 19/02/2021 14:31

@ArcheryAnnie was it SpiderMan by any chance? My DH swears blind it was on there a few months ago but now it's not, something about Disney no longer having the rights?

Oh, I've drawn up a watch list for the next month that will boil my eyeballs out, don't you worry!

It wasn't the "loss" of £5.99 that bothered me, just the weaselly construction of their terms.

No - it was Hidden Figures.

I'm surprised about Spiderman, as it would be in the MCU pack of films. Unless it's Into The Spiderverse, which I think is still on netflix. Possibly.

Hidden figures is on Australian Disney+. Well it was....yup still there.

It’s a very underhand system you describe.

Watch WandaVision instead

Wandavision · 20/02/2021 02:23

On the plus side you need to watch Wanda Vision, Soul, Onwards, The Mandalorian, Mulan, Godmothered, Hamilton, and The One and Only Ivan. Also whatever else you can squeeze in.

SleepingStandingUp · 20/02/2021 08:51

Ooh I'm adding Onwards and Hamilton to my list. What are Godmothered and The One and Only Ivan?

Wandavision · 20/02/2021 10:30

Godmothered is a comedy with Isla Fisher and her fairy godmother. It's good lighthearted fluff. Ivan the One and Only is a CGI about a gorilla and assorted animals in a roadside circus. It's a tad twee but I enjoyed it after a few glasses of wine 😁. There's also Mary Poppins returns on Disney+. And if you haven't seen it Saving Mr Banks (2013) with Emma Thompson as Pamela Travers meeting Walt Disney to turn Mary Poppins into film is very good.
