Anybody been watching the Netflix Documentary The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel?

If so what are your thoughts?

I found it fascinating. Especially the video in the lift. I presume there is a lot of police stuff that we don't know. I felt sorry for Morbid

Letshavesometea · 15/02/2021 18:48

I've finished it- the conclusion they came to is what I thought, I don't think its a mystery what happened.

Kitty2019 · 15/02/2021 19:27

I'm surprised the hotel stayed open as long as it did given the amount of stuff that went on there. Seemed like a hideout for a lot of dodgy characters.....

thecatsthecats · 15/02/2021 20:32

I find the level of exposure given to the conspiracy theorists to be pretty grotesque.

You could skip most of the middle two episodes, which are pretty gross and exploitative of a young woman's tragic death which was entirely in line with her medical history and the evidence.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 15/02/2021 20:34

I found the YouTube sleuths really over-invested had one blonde definitely bordering on creepy.

It was good to get some background but it’s not a mystery what happened- the poor girl obviously suffered a severe manic episode.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 15/02/2021 20:35

*one bloke definitely bordering on creepy.

Tomcullenisahero · 16/02/2021 20:40

I binged this yesterday, such a tragic story but I thought this could have been written better and condensed down. I feel like the program wanted to cause mystery and drip fed relevant information. Poor girl and family.
I have been reading a lot today about Skid Row, I didn't realise the size of this area. I honestly thought it was one road, it's just awful.

CaravaggioLover · 17/02/2021 15:41

Awful programme. Could have been condensed into a single episode. I agree it gives credence to a bunch of idle conspiracy theorists for the sake of sensationalism. The poor girl either suffered a manic episode or took some bad drugs and ended up in the tank. It's really sad and I wish I'd not watched the series (I feel like a voyeur,).

jay55 · 18/02/2021 15:27

I was surprised they could pad it out to so many episodes.
It was awful what happened and I feel for her family, and for the chap who was falsely accused by the online mob. And the poor janitor, I imagine he had a really shitty job at the best of times, given the type of guests.

I've read about parents of kids who were murdered in the Sandy Hook shooting being relentlessly hounded by conspiracy theorists, and so I was also uncomfortable that they were given so much airtime.

The police ultimately did a good job, and it was a nice reminder that in real life things take time, they don't get instant results from labs, coroners etc unlike most fictional police/detective shows.

SinkGirl · 18/02/2021 15:41

Terrible documentary in my view - holding back obvious and crucial info to drag it out. Should have been half the length. The outcome was the most obvious possibility.

The internet sleuths were vile, trend-surfing arseholes. There’s so much good crowd sourcing of criminal investigations going on, but it’s very different when it’s a cold case rather than an active investigation.

ValpolicellaPrimitivo · 18/02/2021 15:56

Dh and I have watched this. It was obvious what had happened after about half an hour and I agree I thought the time given to the internet sleuths was gratuitous and unpalatable. Them using the hotel like a tourist attraction, why were they also on the roof filming?!

Due it's cheap price and location it obviously attracts some vulnerable people and exploiting them was sad.

MaliceOrgan · 21/02/2021 14:56

Totally agree with @SinkGirl. The dragged out a very sad story with endless drip feeds. They gave far too much air time and importance to the idiot amateur sleuths

Her poor family having this rehashed and explored when it was clear what happened.

And trying to make the hotel out as a place of mystery rather than just a hotel in a shit part of town that was frequented by desperate and poor residents.

The hotel manager seemed weirdly disengaged and unmoved by any of it. Calling her mum before she called the police is odd enough, but why admit that on television???

AngelSings · 21/02/2021 15:24

Never got far into episode 2 after already skipping through half of episode 1 (too much focus on the history of the hotel and Skid Row, plus the regular hinting of something other wordly going on). Had such high hopes after watching Don't F**k with Cats.

ChristmasSexyTime · 21/02/2021 15:41

one bloke definitely bordering on creepy.

Definitely - I think I know the one you're talking about. It was as though he knew her. I got bad vibes from him. Like he's the kind to get obsessed with women online and start stalking the fuck out of them.
