A few minor issues eg Carey Mulligan 20 years too young, Peggy Piggott actually already being a very capable archaeologist...but otherwise just wonderful. And a fictional character presumably just in tribute to Detectorists' beautiful theme tune. Might have to watch again...

Ooh, is it like The Detectorists at all? I might look it up.

FenEel · 30/01/2021 00:00

I am actually considering getting Netflix just to watch this - loved the book and live nearish Sutton Hoo

mrwalkensir · 30/01/2021 00:17

dudsville it's about the excavation of Sutton Hoo ie the beautiful wooden ship and everything else. So they've got Johnny Flynn in there playing a fictional character :)

should add that Carey Mulligan is absolutely great though :)

Just finished watching it. Enjoyed it very much.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 30/01/2021 01:15

What an enjoyable, entertaining film.

Highly recommended.

Rockpooler · 30/01/2021 09:15

Really enjoyed it, was a really good watch.

After I watched it I did some reading around - this NS piece was interesting.

I'm going to watch this tonight, relative close to Sutton hoo, and a child free night.

Sad2021 · 30/01/2021 09:26

Watched it too and loved it! So nice to have something so gentle and considered in amongst all the loud action stuff DH and The DSs watch.
I like Carey Mulligan but found her a bit one-dimensional in this though, and yes, too young for the twinset and pearls.
I love Lily James though and interesting to see her in a more ordinary/ less glamorous costume drama type role.

Just finished watching this, loved it. I though Ralph Feinnes was great, almost unrecognizable, shows what a good actor he is.

ApolloandDaphne · 30/01/2021 13:49

we are going to watch it tonight.

0blio · 30/01/2021 14:19

I've just watched this and thought it was excellent. I loved the fact Johnny Flynn was in it.

Constancevariable · 30/01/2021 15:14

This was advised, I saw that Ralph Feinnes was in it so just pressed play. It was very good! I will line the book up to read as well.

cardoon · 30/01/2021 15:26

Loved Ralph and Carey, I thought she did frail really well

MaxRushden · 30/01/2021 15:34

What a beautifully made film, just stunning. Loved it.

Californiabakes · 30/01/2021 17:08

I really liked it

PolarnOPirate · 30/01/2021 17:32

Going to watch this because it's filmed in a village down the road from us Grin but it does sound interesting too!

MinecraftMother · 30/01/2021 19:02

Edith Pretty is my friend's great great aunt.

ItsNotNormalLove · 31/01/2021 02:26

We watched this last night and I have to say, Ralph Fiennes' Suffolk accent was absolutely spot on! Very impressed. Usually when I hear an actor trying to do Norfolk or Suffolk they sound like they're from Devon or Cornwall! Some people think these sound the same but they really don't.
I enjoyed the film, didn't really know much about the topic but now interested to read up.

squashyhat · 31/01/2021 05:39

I enjoyed it but Peggy Piggott (or Margaret Guido as she became) was done a serious disservice. She was an extremely capable and renowned archaeologist and deserved more than just being portrayed as a fictional character's love interest.

AfterSchoolWorry · 31/01/2021 05:45

Loved it. Fascinating.

MrsDThomas · 31/01/2021 08:19

I watched it last night. It was good!

Not amazing but a good and interesting story.

SleepingMammoth · 31/01/2021 08:22

@itsnotnormallove Ralph Fiennes is an Ipswich boy apparently so I guess that helped!

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 31/01/2021 08:24

I have just watched it this morning. Loved the gentle pace of it. I thought it was beautifully done.

There was an interesting interview with the man who did the voice coaching for the film. It was on the Today programme on R4 one day this week.
