It is my go-to TV show when I'm bored and need something on in the background. The way Colin Firth looks at Jennifer Ehle makes my knees go weak. They don't make them like that anymore!

Rewatched it at the weekend, the whole thing, simply magical!

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 26/01/2021 20:39

It really is!

I'm quite sniffy about the Keira Knightly movie version. Far too Hollywood for me. They have 00's haircuts and Kiera wears eyeliner FFS (though Matthew MacFayden is lush)

One of my favourite TV shows ever. It’s glorious.

sweetkitty · 26/01/2021 20:40

DD1 is watching the Kiera/Matthew film just now and I’ve said to her to watch the BBC one instead as it’s much better. I fell in love with Colin Firth a little after it.

Chambored · 26/01/2021 20:41

Oh and I hate the Keira K movie too. Only watched it once (because I love the book). The only person I liked in it was Donald Sutherland. Everything else annoyed me.

milski · 26/01/2021 20:42

Yes! Yes! Yes! I have watched this so many times. I have the dvds and still watch it when it's on telly. Wives and Daughters was also a great adaptation too. The BBC are great at period dramas. :-)

UnityUnited · 26/01/2021 20:42

The BBC series is sublime.

fassnk · 26/01/2021 20:43

My absolute favourite.

bellinisurge · 26/01/2021 20:43

Very much the best version. Am I right that Jennifer Ehle is American? If so, she's even more awesome.
My late Mum adored it. We binge watched it together over and over at the end of her life. I adore it for that and many other reasons

CoffeeRunner · 26/01/2021 20:44

I love it too. Not watched it for ages - I’ll have to get my DVD boxset out.

tilder · 26/01/2021 20:45

I noticed it was on iPlayer and had to watch it. I love period drama and this is by far the best.

Monkeytennis97 · 26/01/2021 20:46

My favourite too. My autumnal go to - every year.

PrincessSarene · 26/01/2021 20:48

Love it! It’s just so so good and I think it really captures the humour from the book. So glad it’s on Netflix so I can watch whenever I feel like it!

BringBackDoves · 26/01/2021 20:48

Mr Collins! Mrs Bennett! It’s so so brilliant.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 26/01/2021 20:53

It's on Netflix people!

Yea Jennifer Ehle is American, I was shocked when I heard as she did anEnglish accent brilliantly

It captures Austen's wit and observation brilliantly IMHO - much more so than any other version I've seen. I remember seeing it first time round but it's the kind of thing you can watch many times over and still love it. I've even bought the piano version of the theme music to have a bash at.

So, so funny. I can't see David Bamber in anything now without thinking of his cringe worthy dancing as Mr Collins. Smile

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 26/01/2021 20:57

If I was a Bennet girl in the early 1800's I really do think at 16 I'd have been a Lydia Blush I was a bit of a prick back at that age. Definitely grew to be more of a Lizzie. But I could never be a Jane

Coopz · 26/01/2021 20:58

Jennifer Ehle is American and he'd 'natural' accent is an American one but I believe her mother is the actress Rosemary Harris who is British.

I love this version of P&P. It's just perfect in every way apart from Jane could've been prettier. The 2005 isn't a patch on the 1995 one. And the US ending of the 2005 is just horrific.

We call that the Teeth Adaptation in this house. The most memorable thing about it is Donald Sutherland’s teeth.
ancientgran · 26/01/2021 21:00

I hated what they did to Mrs Bennett but liked it otherwise.

UnityUnited · 26/01/2021 21:01

I believe they added a scene to the KK version because US audiences weren’t satisfied with the original ending.

IsabelleSE19 · 26/01/2021 21:01

I love it! Before having DC I used to binge watch it whenever I was feeling under the weather but the days of having the sofa or TV to myself are long gone!

thelegohooverer · 26/01/2021 21:17

I used to love it but as I’ve got older I find it a bit meh. I’ve a lot more sympathy for Mrs Bennet now and huge impatience with Mr Bennet and the golden child dynamic with Elizabeth. And poor Mr Collins is so obviously on the autistic spectrum that it bothers me that he’s played as such a figure of fun.

Being middle aged has ruined all the good films for me.

maxbabi · 26/01/2021 21:17

Its my goto also!!!
I love it sooo much
They had an affair/relationship during and after making it.

OppsUpsSide · 26/01/2021 21:19

I love it. It’s superbly cast.
