I will watch it but not at 9pm.

TinaTurnercorner · 20/01/2021 18:31

Love your username btw Jamie.

Spoilers if you haven't watched it yet, but it was so sad, heartbreaking, yet in this day and age there is STILL so much bloody discrimination and nasty f**kers out there who seem to get away with it as Disabilty hate crime seems to be at the bottom of the list as far as the law's concerned.

Makes my blood boil.
And tonight at 9pm BBC2 is a prog about this very thing, from disabled victims of discrimination.

I am a victim, as are my DC, we all have disabilities, and it's disgusting how we are sometimes treated.

I haven't seen the programme yet Tina but I agree, one of my friends is in a wheelchair and she is always getting constant low level discrimination and much worse discrimination fairly often too.
She has to plaster a fake smile on her face otherwise people treat her so badly, she finds the more friendly she is to strangers then the better it is, but she shouldn't have to conform and fake being over the top nice just to avoid abuse!

JamieLeeCurtains · 21/01/2021 10:01

Oh wow that was harrowing.

I've had some moments where I thought people were being arseholes, but nothing compared to the people in the programme.

Deathraystare · 21/01/2021 14:11

The lady in the wheelchair that had Stills Disease , I had that as a child and mum said I was the only one who walked out of the hospital on my ward, the rest sadly would remain in wheelchairs :(

Deathraystare · 21/01/2021 14:12

I was sayinng to my line manager at work, what kind of person complains about a disabled lady on the tv and says they will frighten her kids????!!!

MedusasBadHairDay · 21/01/2021 14:14

I'm not sure I can bring myself to watch this, I've had some awful moments and I can mostly pass for able bodied (aside from when I have to use a walking stick) And I've seen the treatment friends of mine with wheelchairs have suffered from. We are so far from any kind of equal treatment for disabled people.

You are right that more able bodied people should watch programmes like this - disabled people already know this stuff.

TinaTurnercorner · 21/01/2021 18:17

^^ Thing is if it doesn't affect them, they wont bother! Amazing in this day and age, EVERYONE could take just 10 mins or so out of their entire lives, and look up disabilities.and learm

I bet the f**rs that were tormenting that poor woman in the wheelchair, accusing her of faking it, were all bloody benefit cheats! SHE was valid.

DISGUSTING that she and a neighbour had to move out of their homes because of these barstools. The Barstools should be bloody evicted/jailed!

and me and the DCs have had some of the hatred that was shown on the prog, and no, the police do Fk all about it. These people are nasty because they know they can get away with it. Every time.
Makes me so angry.

Next week theres a prog about Katy Price and Harvey. I'm no fan of KP but Ill be watching as she and her son have had trolling too.

I'm sorry you've been through that, we had to call the police about a man who was yelling abuse and trying to grab at me and my husband while I struggled along with my walking stick, and their response was, "oh we know about him already". So he's in the habit of abusing disabled people and he's not been stopped??

SnugglySnerd · 21/01/2021 18:23

Dh and I are able-bodied and we watched last night's programme. We were both horrified. I have 3 friends with different disabilities who have told me about times when people have been rude or thoughtless but nothing like on that programme. What absolute low-lives there are out there.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 21/01/2021 18:28

I watched the Hidden Story one a bit by accident just because it came on but it was excellent. Really compelling. I could not have switched it off.

It was eye opening for me. The hard won victories to move away from eugenics and hiding disabled people away in institutions to them being able to have freedoms that others take for granted.

The people were so inspiring. The mother who campaigned for her daughter to go to mainstream school and the two ladies in wheelchairs who chained themselves to buses. Fighting their impairments and societies attitudes.
I did not really realise that there had been such radical campaigning for the DDA and then the Equalities Act.

I do commend it to anyone who hasn't seen it.

LakeGeneva · 21/01/2021 18:29

I thought it was a really good programme that set out the issues well. There was some stuff that I hadn't heard about previously like the public transport protests which was interesting.

One thing that struck me was that while ofc disabled people need to be able to speak for themselves, they do seem to shoulder the almost the entire burden of bringing about change. I seem to remember back around the time of the original DDA there was an agency whose sole purpose was to enforce what was then new legislation, helping people to take action against employers and providers and so on, but that doesn't really happen now.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 21/01/2021 18:57

All those campaigners who had fought so hard did also say that disability rights have been set back in the last 10 years with cuts to PIP, UC and austerity.

That seemed to be a unanimous opinion from all those involved and is very very sad.

Deathraystare · 22/01/2021 13:02

Yes that is so true. All the most vulnerable suffer.

TinaTurnercorner · 22/01/2021 18:23

Absolutley.
Also I found it interesting that the people who went in front of the bus were arrested almost immediately , yet extinction rebellions are allowed to block streets for days!

But STILL parking in disabled bays with no BB (And yes I know there are hidden disabilities), blocking disabled accesses (This happens to us), and those who wont move their buggies to allow a wheelchair on a bus, the space being the very thing these people fought for.

And YY the 1st place ANY government in power go to for cuts are the disabled/carers.

Where are all these MPs who are supposed to be championing our rights then?

@Deathraystare

Actually, Ceri was my "era" of Cbeebies presenter (you can date yourself as a parent from who was doing Beebies when your kids were that age) and I don't think my kids ever commented on her arm. (Mind you DD is now 8 and hasn't twigged Mr Tumble also does all the other Tumbles despite making the Justin-Tumble connection early on..)

I watched it today, ironically while doing some uni work on the medical vs social model of disabilities and it was very well done - I've passed it onto our ID lecturer to recommend to the rest of the course in terms of how it set everything in context (we do a lot of work on intellectual disabilities with what I'm studying and come heavily from the social model of disability and adapting to enable people).

ValancyRedfern · 23/01/2021 21:56

I thought this was a fantastic programme. I learned so much from it.

TinaTurnercorner · 26/01/2021 19:21

Theres another thread too about Katy Price and Harvey elsewhere on this site, check it out and see all the deleted posts from disablists! It beggars belief!
