I've just finished the 4th season of the last kingdom. It's seriously the best thing I've seen in ages.
If you haven't seen it it focuses on the the time of King Alfred the great and the Saxons, but also the lives of the Danes that were invading/living in the different areas of England, before one England existed.

I know they're making season 5 but until then I need something new.

I've watched Barbarians. I've tried Vikings, but I'm not really taking to it.

So does anybody have any ideas of something similair I may like.
I have Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Many thanks .

I liked Marco Polo.

Another Bernard Cornwell one was Sharpe.

TodgerStrunk · 09/01/2021 18:29

And have you seen Medici?

turtletattle · 09/01/2021 18:33

Oooh I loved last kingdom - I've not seen anything as good as that in ages. Vikings is much more violent, and didn't like it after Ragnar dies, harlots was great for historical detail but the plot didn't quite grab, I've not seen Marco Polo. I did like Medici and Tudors but still not quite last kingdom...

The Last Kingdom is my favourite TV show. I'm not sure anything else comes close! If you like foreign dramas, 'Arthdal Chronicles' is very good on Netflix but the episodes are very long. 'Barbarian' on Netflix was also excellent.

sakura06 · 09/01/2021 22:49

Sorry I see you've watched Barbarian!

sakura06 · 09/01/2021 22:52

Lots of people who like The Last Kingdom watch Outlander too. I like it a lot. The end of Season 1 is horrific though and I had to watch it in fast forward as it's really barbaric.

Love love love The Last Kingdom so much, and have the same predicament as you. We are persevering with Vikings but it’s not the same. I’ve decided that the only solution is to just watch TLK from the start again!

Florabella · 09/01/2021 23:03

I love The Last Kingdom and would definitely suggest Outlander as-good replacement

WutheringShites86 · 09/01/2021 23:05

Vikings is worth sticking with past the death of Ragnar for oogling the adult Ivar the Boneless 😍

Torvean32 · 09/01/2021 23:38

I've never seen Outlanders so maybe an option. I've seen the Tudors, bits of Sharpe. I dont fancy Medici or Marco Polo.

One series i saw brought up if you like TLK is cslled Ressurection Ertugrul.
Its obviously sub titled. However if you enjoy it each series has about 75 x 45 minute episodes with 80 epusodes a season, and 5 seasons. It's got a 92% likability factor so I figure I may try 1 episode.

Im also considering where TLK stopped and picking it up in the books.

@WutheringShites86 thanks for the tip, I'll plough on with vikings.

I liked the first few seasons of outlander except the end of S1 which I didn't watch but it's not quite as good as TLK. I've got the books on the list to read too!

Keep going with Vikings. I've watched The Last Kingdom, all seasons, twice. Watched the Vikings through lock-down 1 and the final 10 episodes came onto Amazon Prime on 30/12. Finished that a couple of days ago. Really good too.

YouBoughtMeAWall · 12/01/2021 18:07

I love the last kingdom. Nothing comes close. I’ve watched vikings too but didn’t stick with it long after Ragnar died. It goes very Hollywood - massive explosions and Lots of cgi. Wasn’t my thing.

peoplearepeople · 13/01/2021 15:44

Also loved The last Kingdom. Vikings really is worth sticking with. Yes, the quality dropped off a little, but to be honest in some of the recent episodes I was just spellbound in how beautifully it was all filmed. One of the few shows I bother to watch properly instead of doing something else at the same time. I just watched the final episode and am now looking forward to the spin off soon. Smile
Have you tried Knightfall? It's on Netflix and also the History channel I think.
Pillars of the earth mini series also has a similar kind of feel.

I like the sound of The Last Kingdom in theory but hear reports that it's a bit rapey. Is this the case? I struggle with sexual violence as entertainment.

YouBoughtMeAWall · 17/01/2021 13:28

@scentedgeranium I’m trying to think back now if there is anything that would fall into the category. There is one storyline at the very start where a girl has her chest exposed by a boy but the viewer doesn’t see her exposed. There’s a bit of a build up where you wonder what he will do to her but he is stopped. There is also a scene at the start in the hall where you can hear women screaming but I don’t think you see them being assaulted. There is one rape scene later on that I can recall.
