Just watching the first episode, seems to be good so far.

Ooh has it just come out? All the episodes or just 1?

gamerchick · 03/01/2021 14:41

I've watched the 3 episodes out. It's getting on my tits the way they've organised it. Show plague first, not jump back and forth ffs. Can't stand it when programs do that.

ShrikeAttack · 03/01/2021 14:44

I will be this evening, I've been looking forward to it. Mixed reviews though!

NaughtipussMaximus · 03/01/2021 20:38

Just watching the first episode. I quite like the flashback structure... seems very true to the book so far. Not the most comfortable viewing the middle of a respiratory pandemic, though!

The Stand is one of my fav King books. I really want to watch and like it. I wasn't disappointed with the new version of IT so I am hopeful.

NaughtipussMaximus · 03/01/2021 20:41

I should clarify that the flashback structure isn’t true to the book at all! But the actual content is pretty close so far.

I have watched one episode on Starzplay it didn't have any more yet - how did someone see three? I thought the casting and everything including the different start/time jumping was good but only because I know the story so well. I wonder how new viewers would find it.

LST · 03/01/2021 20:46

@Calyx72 I have a friend who is a king fan and she said she thinks its OK but only because she's read it. She thinks people who haven't would struggle a bit

BlueThistles · 03/01/2021 20:50

read The Stand decades ago.... yes I was younger and more patient then 🤣

First tv version of it was awful.... actually for the same reasons OP mentions...

I'm hesitating with this second version...

Shorthairlady · 03/01/2021 20:52

The 4 part series that was made in 1994 was good. Might take a look at this new one. Remakes tend to be more miss than hit these days so....Confused

Calyx72 · 03/01/2021 20:55

@LST I agree with your friend. I do think it will an come together.

I love the book and I absolutely loved the 1990s series! Just happy there is a new one to watch that looks good

I didn't watch it on starzplay.
Calyx72 · 03/01/2021 21:09

@gamerchick ah that'll be why you have more episodes then :)

NaughtipussMaximus · 03/01/2021 21:13

I also think they needed to do something different to differentiate it from the 1990s version, so I’m happy with them changing the structure. I’ve read the book quite a few times though so it’s not going to confuse me. DH has read it once and is less impressed by the flashbacks.

catpoooffender · 04/01/2021 10:03

I thought it was very well made, though I'm less sold on the casting. I wonder if that's down to me associating the characters with the actors from the 1990s version though. Stu doesn't seem to have a Texas accent!

LostInMoab · 11/01/2021 00:27

Hooray a thread! I’m a massive fan of both the book and the 90s series. Having watched the first 2 episodes of this series - I really don’t like the flashback structure, I feel it loses the atmosphere that comes from the events happening in chronological order - the speed with which normal life was destroyed and the epic quality of the characters’ journeys across the US.
I had misgivings about some of the casting but liking them so far, though agree Stu should have a TX accent. Also I feel deep misgivings about being attracted to Flagg Blush
Interesting that they’ve made Ralph Brentner into a woman, I hope it works well. I think Harold is absolutely brilliant. DH and I were both shocked at the lack of PPE in the research facilities and found the hospital scene in episode 2 chilling and very relevant.

Calyx72 · 11/01/2021 09:45

I agree with you (and others) again about the timeline. Ralph Brentner being a woman is interesting, I thought she was good Smile.

Nick Andros in the short bit we saw him looked completely different to what I expected. I thought he should be neat and clean but looked dirty. Of course I was thinking of Rob Lowe's Nick! Thinking about it though, he was a drifter before, orphan, maybe this look is more like he would be.

Flagg doesn't have the wicked/evil vibe for me (yet). I enjoyed Lloyd Henreid, think he's well cast.

Harold is perfect in my opinion and I like the casting for Larry Underwood. Rita (Heather Graham!) was great although at first I thought she was too young, she was really good.
