This will be the final series of Spiral. And I hope to come to this thread to be able to ask questions of all the bits I will not be able to understand or will have missed!

All the previous series of Spiral are currently available on BBC iPlayer and there is a discussion thread about them here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/telly_addicts/4099550-spiral-fans

So for those like me who need a helping hand with this French wizardry which I am addicted to can we keep this thread to whatever is going to unfold as from 9pm tonight? Thanks!

And maybe those who are going to binge watch (assuming the BBC makes all episodes available) would want to have their own thread to freely discuss? Smile

So looking forward to watching. So sad it will all soon be over.

I didn't realise it was the last series :(

I can't quite remember what happened at the end of the last series ?

I hope Clement comes back as a ghost

rosegoldwatcher · 02/01/2021 18:19

I don't think that the BBC will put them all up together on i player. they don't usually with the BBC4 9pm subtitled dramas do they?

Will be watching - probably tomorrow.

rosegoldwatcher · 02/01/2021 18:23

@LaMainDeFatima - end of series 7:

Gilout is facing jail for general naughtiness. He took the entire blame to save Laure.
Laure seemed to be making peace with being a mother.
TinTin is working for the French equivalent of AC12.
Roban has retired.
Josephine smiled!

LaMainDeFatima · 02/01/2021 19:06

Ah yes ! I hope gilou is out of prison . Wont be the same without him throwing his weight around

ageingdisgracefully · 02/01/2021 21:50

Am I imagining it, or is it slower - paced than before?

LaMainDeFatima · 02/01/2021 22:09

Possibly. More conversation for sure

And less cases . I've started rewatching the first series and they interjected different cases

Poor lad and lads. This is why I like spiral : the story lines are so hard hitting :(

ageingdisgracefully · 02/01/2021 22:15

Maybe that's it - more talking. It just seems less manic.

The storyline is potentially quite upsetting.

LaMainDeFatima · 02/01/2021 22:19

I think karlsonn will adopt him ....

ageingdisgracefully · 02/01/2021 22:32

I'm missing Roban and his flappy raincoat... Sad

LaMainDeFatima · 02/01/2021 23:02

I'm missing TinTin and the jokes.

stumbledin · 02/01/2021 23:34

I think the pace was slow, but maybe that is to suit the story line of them being on the backlist and having no work.

Laure doesn't really change charging in without thinking of the consequences and still thinking she will get away with it.

Was it just me or did her boss take a bit of a liking to the new Judge!

They all look as though they have been given a make over. Gilou is all manicured and tidy.

Miss Roban and I suppose no Tin Tin.

I didn't think they would be able to put together a plausible storyline after the end of series 7. But am now thinking they migh pull it off.

And so relieved that Josephine has settled in with her former cell mate. I've been fretting since the end of the last series.

It sounded like they have made episode 3 available on iPlayer. I suspect they are trying to please both audiences, those who prefer week by week and those who want to binge watch.

If you can speak French it looks like the whole of series 8 is available online www.canalplus.com/series/engrenages/h/4444010_50001/

The production values are definitely different. Yes - Gilou looks tidier and quite hot. Blush.

Yes - Beckriche has the hots for the new Juge, it appears. He reminds me a lot of a French Ioan Gruffydd.

I'm missing the grubbiness but hoping for a decent storyline.

LaMainDeFatima · 03/01/2021 14:52

Thanks @stumbledin . They're on IPlayer so I'm catching up there which free . I notice il faut s abonner on canal plus but will check it out once I've exhausted everything French on All4 Walter presents and Netflix.

Have you watched Le Bureau on amazon Prime ? That's well worth a watch . First few series are free

DieSchottin93 · 03/01/2021 16:13

I think all 8 episodes are on iPlayer now which is bad news for me because my work is shut again so I have plenty of opportunity to sit at home and binge it all Grin.

The new judge looks impossibly young and I wasn't all that impressed with her refusal to work with Laure because of the Gilou case Hmm Surely she can put her thoughts on that matter to one side when it comes to a completely unconnected case.

Did anyone else think the new court place looked more like a posh shopping centre? Grin

rosegoldwatcher · 03/01/2021 18:04

Only 8 episodes?!

ageingdisgracefully · 03/01/2021 18:28

10 according to my iplayer. Smile

rosegoldwatcher · 03/01/2021 18:43

and 10 according to IMDb - that's better!

stumbledin · 03/01/2021 18:58

Okay binge watchers (am tempted to join you!) hope you arrange to meet up on your own thread!

It seems there are 10 episodes. I wonder if they got caught up in covid restrictions. Series 4-7 were all 12.

Had totally forgotten that in fact in French the series isn't Spiral at all but Gears !

I didn't realise that rather horrible (and non French) looking building is the new Court building. I wonder what has happened to that lovely old building. At least Roban was spared the indignity of having to clock into a shopping centre.

On the Guardian series recap page some commentators have had interesting info about that.

I thought the young boy, the suspected culprit, was very good.

And glad as I am that Josephine has taken up fighting rape cases it was good to see her swinging into action and making sure the cops dont try and cut corners. (A constant them in Spiral!)

For anyone interested interview with Caroline Proust in the Times www.thetimes.co.uk/article/spiral-star-caroline-proust-is-keen-to-move-on-after-15-years-of-her-tricky-role-fjcrd5j8g

Oh dear - you have to be a subscriber to read that Times article!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/01/2021 19:06

I watched the first two episodes in real-time last night then binge-watched the rest today. Just wow. I will say no more.

stumbledin · 03/01/2021 19:11

rosegoldwatcher

I think you can subscribe for free and get 2-3 article a week or maybe a month. I cant remember how i read it, but think I subscribed under an old email address.

newmodelarmy - maybe there should be a thread for the binge watchers - will be hard to restrain from commenting over the next 4 weeks.

I thought at the end of series 7 Laure had in fact flunked out of meeting up again with Romy Or did I just imagine it?

But now she is co-parenting can only think the police must have some super creche where Romy is checked in at 6 in the morning and then collect by whichever parent is having her for sleeps, at midnight as police seem to be on duty all day and most of the night!

I can't remember now why Gilou is in jail - can someone remind me?

I've just started season 8!
