So DP is fairly obsessed with Alan Partridge - knows all the jokes, quotes episodes etc. He has a mug with Steve Coogan on etc.

Over Christmas he encouraged me to watch some of the early ones and I hated it. When I asked DP what he enjoyed about it he said "it's because we're all a bit Partridge and it's so cringeworthy it's good.

So I wondered, does anyone on MN enjoy it, and if so, what is the attraction? I feel like I need to understand it more.

We've only watched the tv series from early 2000s but here is a to a youtube clip from the podcast if you haven't heard of him...

I fucking love it.

BillCar · 01/01/2021 16:52

See my username Smile

Sstarlight · 01/01/2021 16:53

We quote it at each other a lot at home. "That was classic intercourse". Grin

pontiouspilates · 01/01/2021 16:54

Yup, love it. We also quote a lot of Partridge at home.

mynameiscalypso · 01/01/2021 16:55

For me, I think part of it is the whole story. I watched The Day Today in the 1990s and then Knowing Me, Knowing You and by then you're quite invested in him as a character. But it's a bit like David Brent in The Office, you either like it or don't. I don't watch it much now but love The Trip with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon.

MrsGrindah · 01/01/2021 16:57

@mynameiscalypso I love The Trip! I often say on a night “ Gentlemen to bed! For we rise at dawn...”etc

NiceGerbil · 01/01/2021 16:57

Love Alan partridge

They're sex people Lynn!

TheScurrilousFunge · 01/01/2021 16:59

We're Partridge People and we quote it a lot. We bought BIL an Alan Partridge blazer badge for Christmas and hope one day to find a Castrol GTX jacket.

jendifer · 01/01/2021 16:59

So if you like it, what is it that you like? The character? We're on to season two and he makes me cringe so maybe i'm in the not liking camp. I've enjoyed being able to quote bits of it to DP but that's it so far!

I love Alan Partridge.

The film Alpha Papa is hilarious.

I also love Steve Coogan as a serious actor.

Pinkclarko · 01/01/2021 17:02

Adore him. He’s a dick but not quite enough for you to not have a bit of empathy at times.

This.
Bilingualspingual · 01/01/2021 17:05

If you hate it, what is it you hate about it? Is it because he’s embarrassing and makes you feel uncomfortable? I used to feel like that about Frank Spencer but Alan is more Teflon and is less aware. If you don’t like it, you don’t like it but I’d advise you to watch a little bit more (cos I love him)

Palavah · 01/01/2021 17:05

The cringe is funny.

I love it - we were quoting it at each other in bed this morning (each to their own!).

I do think the amusement is at least half down to regular repetition of lines between friends and therefore associating it with laughing heartily.

@jendifer I hated it when I first watched it. But I love it now. One of my favourites. Stick with it, it might grow on you.

DodgeRainClouds · 01/01/2021 17:08

Its absolutely hilarious. My husband and I quote it constantly to each other. Shouting “Dan” repeatedly across a car park to our bother on law is one fond memory Grin

JoyDivisionOvenGlovesx · 01/01/2021 17:10

Dan? Dan! Daaaaaaaan!!!

AliceMadHatter · 01/01/2021 17:11

@NiceGerbil

Love Alan partridge

They're sex people Lynn!

Love that episode
SuperbGorgonzola · 01/01/2021 17:12

I really like it too.

jendifer · 01/01/2021 17:12

It was the Dan episode that finally got me round to watching it because of DP shouting Dan all the time!

I think I cringe because of how sexist/racist/offensive he can be and I want to say to him "Can you just not treat people like that" Blush

I did like one episode when they're at the travel lodge and Alan is the only guest because they're doing work there. But DP says that isn't one of the best episodes!

It's bloody brilliant. When my DH is being a bit cringe I refer to him as Alan.

Accidental Partridge on Twitter is hilarious.

devildeepbluesea · 01/01/2021 17:13

It's genius. Love every minute of Partridge.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 01/01/2021 17:16

I came on here to say Daaaan but I've been beaten to it !
We all know an Alan Partridge, look at Richard Madeley's presenting style recently

BadgeronaMoped · 01/01/2021 17:17

I love it, I remember quoting it with my friends at school in the 90s. Lynn is my favourite, followed by Michael. DH has never liked it, but luckily Dsis does, so I have someone to say "Lynn, I've pierced my foot on a spike!" to.
Alan is awful but that's the whole point Grin
