Watched it when it was first on BBC because I'd previously read the book. Most of the time a novel is better than tv/film adaptation (apart from 'A Christmas Carol', with Alistair Sim, which is very true to Charles Dickens' novel). Yes, the book version was better, but the adaptation did a good job. Having watched it again on BBC4, the look in Diana Riggs' eyes at the horror of her current situation (at the end) is awful, and illustrates what a good actress she was.
