A Teacher

New show on FX (probably not available in the UK yet) Kate Mara plays a young teacher who becomes involved with a 17 year old pupil. It's horrific and compelling - some awful scenarios of grooming.

I think these series eventually get moved to Netflix, look out for it.

Did anyone watch this on BBC2 last night? I've seen the whole series and am desperate to talk to someone about it!

Thank you for this, will catch up on Sky

thelake · 05/01/2021 00:26

Watching.

Q1w2e3 · 05/01/2021 01:15

I’ve watched the first four and will definitely be back to talk about it when I’m finished! I’m finding it quite disturbing.

user1485461206 · 05/01/2021 08:30

I watched it all last night, Nick Robinson is a great actor, did find it a bit slow wasn’t completely gripped but I wanted to see how it turned out

Songsofexperience · 05/01/2021 15:20

I watched it. In my view, this is the first time I've seen a show which accurately describes the emotional devastation of such a relationship. That final scene left me with a knot in my stomach.

Q1w2e3 · 05/01/2021 16:09

I’ve finished now. Totally agree, Songsofexperience. The final scene was heartbreaking.

Songsofexperience · 05/01/2021 16:30

We live in a world which glorifies 'moving on' 'moving forward'. It's uncomfortable to acknowledge that sometimes, some things will never not be painful. I found it heart breaking, yes, but quite refreshing at the same time because it rings true.

Cat2014 · 05/01/2021 16:45

It’s on I player now. V well done

nokidshere · 05/01/2021 18:21

What's it called?

Kaia20 · 05/01/2021 18:24

Hi,
I don’t know the show myself but I just wondered something based on comments.

The pupil was 17, and I’m assuming the teacher was much older but would it still be classed as grooming if the older person wasn’t their teacher? Because I always (maybe wrongly) assumed that grooming was a predatory thing by adults towards underage children? I’m sorry if I sound ignorant, it’s a genuine question though

thelake · 05/01/2021 18:42

Haven't watched it all, but wondered if Claire is unstable due to having missed out on the uni experience because she looked after her Dad. Does she want to run away and be a student again?

Songsofexperience · 05/01/2021 19:10

Kaia It depends on whether you mean legally speaking or in terms of psychological impact?
If you mean the former, then it makes a difference whether or not the young person is directly under the responsibility of the teacher. It's much more severely punished in all countries.
Psychologically, both scenarios are damaging and of course it's still grooming even if the adult is not the teacher.
I just think the teacher- student scenario is especially damaging because it takes place in a setting which is central to both parties' lives (place of work for the teacher, place of learning and 'building' for the kid). Neither of them can avoid going there.
Think of such a relationship as the worst that an affair at work could throw at you, but with one of the parties involved being underage and unable to quit, and the other potentially going to jail...

Songsofexperience · 05/01/2021 19:16

*and I should add: underage and emotionally and mentally unable to process the damage until much much later...

thelake · 05/01/2021 21:14

I'm on episode 5 and honestly think Claire is crazy. She has a great life.

thelake · 05/01/2021 21:40

The actor who plays his Eric's friend seems too old casting wise

user1485461206 · 05/01/2021 22:06

Isn’t the age of consent 18 in America so even if she wasn’t his teacher she would still be having sex with a minor

US series about teens always feature cast who are well into their 20s. I wonder how it would look if they'd cast real teens... I've always thought it's a problem as it skews perception of what teenagers are really like.

jessstan1 · 05/01/2021 22:18

The last two or three episodes (there are ten), were better and brought it all home exactly how damaging their relationship was to both but especially to him. It was worth watching just for that.

The early episodes reminded me of those overly dramatised low budget films with loud incidental music, which you get on Channel 5. However, ultimately it was better than that.

It depends which state, in some it is 17 (New York for example). However the point was that she was his teacher and that was a crime even if he had been 18.
thelake · 05/01/2021 22:42

About to watch episode 9 and agree that watching how it unravels and what happens after is interesting and adds more depth
