The Undoing- I have a theory (spoiler discussions)

No idea how I got sucked into this show as it’s incredibly slow and seems to mainly involve Nicole Kidman walking around before something happens in the final 2 minutes.

Also, I’m really lousy at whodunnits.

But anyway...

I think that Donald Sutherland’s character is the murderer.

I think it was because Elena was blackmailing him for some reason. Was there ever an explanation for how she and her husband were well off enough to afford a very expensive private school for their son? I don’t think we heard about their jobs (I know she was a sculptor but was that her actual job, and was she earning well?), and their apartment seems modest.

If I was to really eek it out, I’d guess that old Donny was either Elena’s father, or fathered her son, and was a source of income for her. Wasn’t there some conversation at the start between Elena and Grace about the two boys looking a bit similar? I thought this was to line up the Elena/Jonathan affair, but now I’m thinking the resemblance may be down to Donald.

Anyway, here’s my big theory.

The opening credits give it away.

It shows a happy little girl with red curly hair (so Nicole’s character as a child) playing. And then the bubble she’s playing with bursts.

Little girl. Bubble bursting. Kind of feels like something to do with a parent.

So pfiffle my mad theory, and add your own.

I haven’t seen the latest episode but wasn’t Elena’s son at the school on a Bursary?

I’m loving Donald Sutherland in this, he does come across as a bit shifty.

Hugh grant's character helped them get a pace, I suspect Donald Sunderland is paying for it under the guise if a bursary.

I still can't decide if I like it, its beginning to feel a bit ridiculous in a whole big little lies way.

I think Hugh is going to blame Grace for the murder. I am finding it hard to concentrate due to Nicole's face, she looks like an animation.

I said I thought it would be Donald Sutherland. Not sure why I think that but I do.

Yep, I don’t trust her Dad at all, I think he is Elena’s father, hence her being obsessed with/painting her sister.

I thought Nicole’s friend with the long blonde hair would be somehow involved.

Yes, she could be the other other women from before (or “sad fuck” as the lawyer said).

Hugh Grant paid the school fees and went to Donald to get the cash to help when he lost his dad.

I think Donald killed her to frame Hugh for cheating on his daughter but Nicole might actually get framed.

I think whoever goes down for it won't be the real culprit.

Nicole's hair looks AMAZING as did the dead woman's.

Yes I commented about that to DH. I never found him goodlooking but he is definitely better looking now in my view.

She just looks ridiculous. Not a single wrinkle on her face. Wrinkles give character. She just looks bland and boring.

DP and I agreed the other day it was Donald Sutherland but then we realised that this was just because it's Donald Sutherland and therefore he has to be up to no good. #typecast.

My DH shares the same theory as you OP with D.S being the murderer, he always says why would a big star be playing a seemingly minor role otherwise! Now we know he had continual affairs whilst married to Nicole’s mother it does seem likely he has been up to some dodgy dealings.

I’m also finding Nicole’s immovable face distracting, why do that? Why not just age gracefully? I understand the pressure on women on screen but it’s too much. It’s so much more noticeable with Hugh’s naturally craggy face, at least it moves and shows emotion! When she had tears falling that was the only way to know she was upset! Such a shame.

Is anyone finding the theme song annoying too with Nicole’s voice?! We’ve taken to forwarding it, we can’t take it any more!

Other than all that I’ve started to get into this series now and want to know what happens.

I think Elena’s son is on a scholarship isn’t he? But it could be that D.S has funded it. I don’t think he could be the father of the son but maybe he is her father, that would make sense.

Love Nicole’s hair and figure though.

I have a theory that it's their son.. I dunno why I just think he's odd and maybe could have known about the affair and wanted to take her out of the picture? This is also more than likely wrong but I love a guess who's the killer drama

I am suspecting everyone at this point. Did Nicole have a sapphic relationship with Elena? Are Elena and Nicole sisters? All bets are off.

I think it's Donald Sutherland or Lily Rabe's character (or both of them), DH thinks it's Elena's son.

I thought it was the son. I really hope I’m not sure saying in two weeks that it’s 6 hours I’ll never get back. So many dramas start so well, exciting and pacy then wrap everything up in the last 5 minutes with a disappointingly dull result.

Do any of you who think it’s Donald feel my theory about the credits holds weight?

They should have let that kid have a dog, then he would have been outside training it to savage people taking it for walks instead of murdering his classmate's mothers.
