I have a love/hate relationship with this show. Mostly I love it, and the escapism it represents. It also makes me question my own future, and whether I could see myself retiring abroad (currently single!). Most of the presenters are very good and amiable, although do try a little hard to 'push the product', often when the person viewing has no interest at all!
What gets on my nerves, is the buyers' obsession with space. Why would you need a huge kitchen, or 4 bedrooms, when it's just going to be you and your other half knocking about there?
And what do you expect for 50 grand?!
And then when they view, it's like they've lost all sense of their own identity; they're literally looking at it through their own children and grandchildren's eyes. One woman rejected a property because it had a shower, and no bath for her grandchild Hmm Just how often do you think they're going to be visiting, for this to emerge as a major and insurmountable issue?!
And other went round mentally kidproofing the place, even though there were no grandchildren on the horizon yet Confused Get a life!!!
Don't get me started on those who treat the whole thing as a jolly, with no intention to buy. You can see the presenters visibly sag, when they say 'what we're going to do, is go home and weigh up the finances, then return to the area in a few weeks.' Grin
Worse still, are those who put in eyewateringly low offers, even though the place (invariably in Spain) has already seen its price slashed, and is already way under budget. Where is the integrity??? Angry
What are your thoughts on this programme? Smile

They now feature a swanky property that's for sale locally so the presenter can gush at what the millionaires can buy but I'm just not interested. Some of them are naff. TBH I like the ones where people have lower budgets and realistic expectations so I can imagine buying it myself, ha ha.

Also, why do they never mention the management fees which must apply at those apartment complexes? That swimming pool doesn't come free and will be rammed in the summer months! The urbanisations in Spain generally look dire and those golf course flats - no thanks.

I love the Florida programmes ( I dream of a holiday home there ) and there have been none since Covid.
I record the programmes and delete the French ones as living in the French countryside doesn't appeal to me. I delete the Spanish countryside ones too as living far from the sea in a village in the hills in a quirky house with no access to a pool in sweltering heat just doesn't appeal to me either.
Watched the show on two Glasgow sisters in Cyprus yesterday.
Did anyone else on this thread watch it ?
If so what did you think ?
I was shocked with their choice.
A townhouse overlooking a narrow rectangular pool that appeared to be in the shade of its surrounding buildings. It had a very small back patio garden with dark conifers behind it. Compared to some of the other properties shown I thought it was a poor choice. But the woman buying it loved it - there's no accounting for taste. Smile

That would be my idea of hell! They were shown a much nicer one with a bit of outside space! That flat would be ok if you were on an 18 to 30 holiday, if such things still exist. 🙄

I FF through the millionaire properties - they are so OTT.

LadyEloise1 · 16/01/2022 18:19

I ff through them as well.
A girl can dream but not that big. Smile

lazymum99 · 17/01/2022 08:39

I have been watching the old ones on Really at lunch time. When and where are the new ones on?

LadyEloise1 · 17/01/2022 09:17

On Channel 4 at around 3 pm

lazymum99 · 17/01/2022 12:51

Thanks. I will set to record!

Ellmau · 17/01/2022 20:11

I like the new presenter, Craig.

@Ellmau

I like the new presenter, Craig.
I was racking my brains trying to think where I knew him from and then it hit me - QVC! I remember some years ago they tried out a few new presenters and the viewers were able to vote for their favourite. He got the job.

I liked Jonny, he didn't hold back did he? Grin

There have been two new episodes recently where I live in Cyprus - I shouldn't watch them as I end up shouting at the TV Angry The presenters always pronounce the village names incorrectly - they're working with local estate agents FFS. And the geography is always wrong, you'd think the researchers/producers would do their homework; it's very misleading.

LadyEloise1 · 01/02/2022 09:33

I watched the Estepona one last night.
There were 3 contenders !!!!
One in their chosen location was ....Too big !!!
They were planning to retire there. It was gorgeous and would give them extra space when visitors came.
They bought elsewhere, not in their "perfect" location. Shock

Ellmau · 07/02/2022 20:52

"We want to be self sufficient, off the grid and virtue signally green and vegan of course). But a pool is a must, and while we're at it we'll rip out a perfectly serviceable kitchen and put in a new one with all the appliances."

Ha, I do almost the opposite. Never watch the Florida or Carribean ones as owning something is so out of my range of possibilities. I hate the new purpose built Spanish 'urbanisation' little town houses/apartments surrounding a shared pool or the ones in Portugal where the bloke is only interested in playing golf. I only fantasise about rural or character city town houses or flats with wrought iron balconies.

So do I. I loved his sarcasm and wit, which was just what some of the house hunters deserved when they had totally unrealistic expectations and/or gave nonsensical reasons for liking/non liking particular properties - he'd always call them out on it.
LadyEloise1 · 21/03/2023 09:27

It's not on at the moment, I really miss my bit of escapism at the end of my day. But oh so many repeats !

Thinking of Jonny and his loved ones.
Such a difficult time for them. Sad
I hope he is getting all the support he needs.

BaffledAgain · 22/03/2023 07:19

@LadyEloise1 Yes I'm also suffering withdrawal symptoms from not watching A Place in the Sun. However I have discovered that A New Life in the Sun is filling that gap quite nicely Was reluctant initially but am now loving it..... and I've got 40 episodes recorded Blush

LadyEloise1 · 06/08/2023 10:31

It's just all bl*ody repeats.
When will a new series start I wonder ?

Again, thinking of Johnny and his loved ones.
