Thanks for the reminder, I'll probably watch on Monday because I'm working this weekend. I'll be back next week to join the chat & share my thoughts

NotEnoughTime · 14/11/2020 19:16

I'm really looking forward to this.

Deathraystare · 14/11/2020 19:27

My friend reminded me of this . Looking forward to it! Not watching I'm a celeb though.

It's really long though. For a Sunday night at 9.

Loving the set designs. And london in that era. Very authentic.

Harassed for another 18 years, shocking

stumbledin · 16/11/2020 14:42

I watched this not realising it would be 2 hours, and think I didn't really appreciate the second half as much as it might have deserved. Would love to read newspaper accounts of the trial at that time.

I hope some of the people involved will be interviewed as it would be good to know if they felt it was accurate.

Not doubting the police actions. Unfortunately common, and Nottingdale Police station had a really bad reputation not just for racism, but corrupt behaviour.

The area was much for run down than shown, very run down, with houses in terrible conditions.

And I think some of the timeline, eg the building of the westway was probably finished by then. And, maybe I was wrong but one of the scenes had what I think was meant to represent Grenfell being built, hadn't yet started.

I think the film was very moving, in an upsetting way, but have always found that Steve McQueen somehow cant help make things look a bit too beautiful - even in 12 Years a Slave. Sad

Deathraystare · 17/11/2020 13:37

Missed first 10 minutes as thought it was on BBC2!

Did enjoy it. Especially the music, the older lady (forgotten her name) sitting out in the street, fag hanging out of mouth!

It was indeed shocking how they harassed the guy. I hadn't realised it was true until Darcus Howe appeared! He really should that policeman up!

TheWashingFairyatemyhamster · 17/11/2020 19:15

The acting was fantastic. Such a great ensemble. I thought the guy that played Darcus Howe was so compelling, and Leticia Wright too. I also always love to see Llewella Gideon in anything. She steals every scene she’s in as far as I’m concerned and has such amazing range.

I’m looking forward to seeing more from the anthology.

Lovers Rock tonight.

Lovers Rock was so good!

stumbledin · 23/11/2020 13:15

It took me a little while to get into, as I suppose I was expecting some sort of "action" ie police turning up.

But once I sort of relaxed into it, enjoyed it. Although have to accept that I probably missed a lot of the cultural references, but surprised how much of the music I recognised!

theneverendinglaundry · 23/11/2020 14:22

I loved it.

The man with the cross really did used to walk around that area. I used to see him on Kensington High Street in the 90s, he had very very long matted dreadlocks then.

Misbeehived · 24/11/2020 02:27

Lovers Rock just perfect. Loved it more than Mangrove and thought Mangrove was outstanding. Steve McQueen is so so good!

Deathraystare · 24/11/2020 18:56

Really enjoyed Lovers Rock even though I loathe that music. I loved that it was basically people just enjoying themselves, dancing with such joy! I laughed at the end when one of the ladies climbed into her bedroom, slipped under the clovers, closed her eyes, then her mum shouted up to her about getting up for church!

I mentioned to my colleague about the man with the cross and she said he had died. She often saw him around Ladbroke Grove.

Great episode tonight.

Have to say was disappointed in the 3 film.

Unless you google the real story not sure what it was meant to be saying.

And I know everyone goes on about him being such a great film maker but I think sometimes his great photography and languid style go against the actual story. Thought this about last nigh - and I know this probably seen as some sort of heresay, though that about 12 Years a Slave. Blush
