It's on Netflix on Wednesday.

Love the book and the Hitchcock version so I'm looking forward to this.
It's a shame that Lily James is in the papers for the wrong reasons though.

Love the Hitchcock version.... don't know if I want to watch or not?

ageingdisgracefully · 21/10/2020 07:46

Another version? Who's in it please?

ageingdisgracefully · 21/10/2020 08:03

Ah..found it. May be worth a watch but a lot to live up to.

TheNewLook · 21/10/2020 22:03

I’m watching it... Still in Monte Carlo, it’s very sexed up. In the book there’s no love story and fumblings on the beach - unless it’s so subtle that I missed it. In the book he’s a stuffed shirt and they go on these awkward, polite excursions. You feel he proposes on a whim when she says she’s leaving Monte Carlo, as he thinks he “ought” to have a wife, rather than feeling anything romantic for her.

Just my early reading of it...

avenueq · 21/10/2020 22:07

@TheNewLook I totally agree. Giving it a spin for modern audiences I feel

iftherewereahorseyinthehouse · 21/10/2020 22:11

Just watched it. Wasn't convinced. It looked beautiful but there was no atmosphere.

KenzoBaby · 21/10/2020 22:47

I've never read the book or seen previous versions but I've been hooked!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 21/10/2020 22:51

Lilly James doesn’t do it for me.

Christine Scott Thomas was wonderful and the cottage on the beach and all the interiors were stunning.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 21/10/2020 22:52

Sorry, Kristin.

Chickenitalia · 21/10/2020 23:23

Just watched it now. It’s been a long time since I read the book but it’s far more raunchy than Daphne would have written it! Having said that, I enjoyed it. There’s a couple of spooky moments but otherwise I guess it is a bit formulaic... but fun for an evening curled up at home.

Lily and Armie were far too good looking though.

incognitomum · 21/10/2020 23:25

I enjoyed the original film more but loved the scenery in this. Plus lead man was hot!

ageingdisgracefully · 22/10/2020 06:24

There was a version with Charles Dance and the actress who's Emilia Fox's mother? Diana Rigg was Danvers.? That was quite good.

LongPauseNoAnswer · 22/10/2020 06:29

I really enjoyed it too. It was definitely missing the the deeper haunted feeing of the new Mrs. De Winter by Rebecca. It wasn’t as atmospheric as the book but I still liked it.

Panicmode1 · 22/10/2020 06:31

I thought it was dreadful. It is one of my favourite books and I was so looking forward to watching it. But the casting was all wrong. Maxim is much older than his wife, who is underconfident, mousy, scared of everything. There wasn't enough menace or tension or credibility in any of this - making Lily James a sort of 'plucky problem solver' just rendered the whole thing ridiculous. And the ending was ludicrous!!

CallieJones · 22/10/2020 11:54

I think the version with Charles Dance was with Emilia Fox rather than her mothet

CallieJones · 22/10/2020 12:16

I think the age gap between charles dance and a young Emilia Fox worked well. I've got the DVD of that version

CallieJones · 22/10/2020 12:18

This was the 97 version

Chardonnay73 · 22/10/2020 12:35

I was so looking forward to seeing this... but I was very disappointed.
Maxim was too young, the girl was not nervous and too savvy. I didn’t find KST Mrs Danvers intimidating at all.
Felt like it was being filmed in lockdown when they were all sitting outside under that canopy in the rain 😂

ageingdisgracefully · 22/10/2020 12:35

You're right, Callie! Grin. Her mother may have been in another version. Or something. I can't remember her name to look her up. Smile

CallieJones · 22/10/2020 13:35

Was it joanna david?

CallieJones · 22/10/2020 13:37

You're right! She was in an earlier adaptation of Rebecca!

ageingdisgracefully · 22/10/2020 18:59

So I hadn't imagined it. Yes - Joanna David. With Anna Massey as Danvers. 1979.

LilacCandle · 22/10/2020 19:15

That's funny. Anna Massey was married to the actor who played Max de Winter in that version at some point

MirandaGoshawk · 22/10/2020 19:18

@CallieJones

I think the version with Charles Dance was with Emilia Fox rather than her mothet
The Girl was Joanna David, Emilia Fox's mother, I think with Charles Dance.
MirandaGoshawk · 22/10/2020 19:20

Ah, apologies, Joanna David must've been with someone else.
