Available today. DH and I will be watching tonight. Creating this thread in readiness!

I am stupidly excited as Hill House was one of my favourite series of all time. Is it too much to ask to hope this series is as good?!

Will update once watched the first episode...

when the American au pair goes through the gate, how is it that the woman leaves with her when before the man didn't get through the front gate when he left with the English au pair?

It's to do with the "it's you, it's me, it's us" statement. I don't want to say more to avoid major spoilers. I did wonder that myself at first.

If there is any haunting going on I think it will be Henry James spinning in his grave.

I watched episode 7 and 8 last night. I just find the repetitive dialogue so irritating. First with the “perfectly splendid” and now with the “tucked away aren’t I” and the “wake, walk, sleep” over and over. Also the narrator’s accent in episode 8 was jarring in its badness. Although I think I now know who the narrator is.

Still love the music, which is beautiful and sad. Still prefer Hill House by a mile. The character arcs were epic and you felt like you were on a journey with them from start to finish and were really rooting for them. I’m not engaged with any of the characters in Bly Manor whatsoever.

I hated Hill House but I'm enjoying this one, funny accents and all.

StormyLovesOdd · 14/10/2020 23:37

It's very slow to start with but it's worth it once you get to episode 5 and I loved the last 2 episodes.

I'm planning to watch it all again because I think now I know the ending I'll have a lot of "ohhh" moments in the first episodes.

Really reminded me of some of the best Hammer Horror films, especially the black and white episode with Viola's story.

It's great to see women playing most of the interesting lead charectors too. Hope there's a 3rd series.

Finished it tonight!
I thought Hill House was amazing so was very excited to see this released, but unfortunately it SO doesn't match up.

That said, I've watched all 9 episodes and enjoyed most of them. I guessed who the narrator was by about Ep3 given the bizarre affectations to the accent!

I just wish - as someone else said, Mike Flanagan had either set it in the US, if he wanted to use the same actors, or found them a better voice coach! Uncle Henry's was particularly terrible!

I liked both the child actors in it (doesn't Flora pick up saying 'Absolutely splendid' from Rebecca when she arrives? Mary Poppins is mentioned and Rebecca says something like, 'I'm not Mary Poppins but I am absolutely splendid' and so Flora latches on to i). I think as a previous poster said, it's supposed to be annoying and part of the whole 'Poppins' thing.

I'm afraid I really hated Ep8... I just found it incredibly boring and at odds with the rest of the story. I wanted the characters I knew back.

Loved the lesbian storyline (as a lesbian!!) - VERY rare to have it not being central to the plot itself. Its' a love story that happens to have been two women but could just as easily have been a man and a woman.

Yeah- to be honest, I'd just have happily have watched 9 episodes focussing on Dani and Jamie but I suppose I'm missing the point there Grin.

I loved Hill House but found Bly Manor a struggle to get through.

Owen and Hannah were great. The rest of the adults were let down by those awful accents.

I thought episode 8 was boring and long-winded. They could have told that particular story in about ten minutes, rather than dragging it out for an entire episode.

PerfidiousAlbion · 16/10/2020 20:37

Most series these days are dragged out over many episodes as that’s what the stations/providers (Amazon/Netflix etc..) demand. God knows why.

teaandcustardcreamsx · 19/10/2020 13:59

I found it rather enjoyable tbh. While at times it was slow and tedious and in the later episodes it was rather easy to figure out what was going to be said, I still preferred it to hill house. With hill house I got around half way through the first half of episode one and got bored Grin

katew355 · 21/10/2020 23:25

I finished watching it tonight and loved it. I really liked how ep 8 pulled it all together too. Regarding the 'splendid' comments, we heard Rebecca say it when she first arrived so I assumed that when Flora said it it was because those were the times Rebecca was in her body. Also, I made the assumption right at the start who the narrator was from the off and it didn't occur to me it was a plot twist when we found out!!

josbd · 22/10/2020 00:48

I liked the series, but did find it strangely uninvolving at times. I could have lived with the Brit accents (yes, even "perfectly splendid") had I not distinctly heard the word: "GOTTEN" uttered by one of the supposed Brits.... I rather think it was the little girl... and that meant I was instantly waiting for the next slip!

I agree with you Pebble re the lesbian relationship. I am also lesbian, and it was an absolute joy to see this couple treated as any other. Without remark! This is the way it should be. It is time!

[I have only seen one other lesbian relationship dealt with so beautifully: That of Clarke and Lexa in "The100". I hoped then that such a high profile coupling/rel being taken for granted would pave the way for us to say,: " And breathe! Our work here is finally done"!!]

And, well, blimey; it was!

Samcro · 23/10/2020 16:21

i finished it. found the ending odd.

Sheknowsaboutme · 24/10/2020 21:15

Ive just watched episode one. Unsure if ill carry on, not my cup of tea.

saiditbetterthanme · 28/10/2020 01:11

I liked it

saiditbetterthanme · 28/10/2020 01:12

I liked it

CarpeVitam · 28/10/2020 01:38

Don't bother, it's sooo boring!

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 30/10/2020 11:03

So I've still not got round to watching it and I'm not sure if it's worth the time investment after the reviews here! But I finally finished Shitts Creek last night (bloody marvellous telly, literally faultless) and I need a rebound show to distract me from feeling very bereft, maybe I should embrace the silliness if this one and go for it Grin
