That's interesting. I thought there was an agreement that no more episodes would be made once the creator of Montalbano was dead.

But that he had locked away an unseen script which he thought was too political to be made.

Maybe I just fell for series hype!

Ooooooooo. It’s not the last one then. Which is it?

AncoraAmarena · 07/10/2020 16:03

I think these will be new to the UK, not new since Andrea Camilleri died.

There have been loads shown in Italy that haven't made it to BBC4 yet, hopefully it will be some of those!

My weekend just got a lot better.

My 1 big grip that I point out to my Italian DH every program is there is never any bloody traffic on the streets!

An Italian town in Sicily with completely empty streets.... don't know why but it does annoy me!

FairFriday · 07/10/2020 16:14

I impressed (maybe not) a friends Italian mum with some bad words picked up from this show. She taught me a few more...

Apparently Luca Zingaretti has (co ?) directed these too ...

Great, look forward to that.

FairFriday · 07/10/2020 16:18

I have read all the books apart from the latest one. I was worried he was going to bump him off!

stumbledin · 07/10/2020 16:57

Saw this is an article:

... Detective Montalbano suffered terrible blows in 2019 and 2020 with the deaths of creator and writer, Andrea Camilleri, director Alberto Sironi and production designer Luciano Ricceri. Last summer, however, the production managed to create these two new episodes with Detective Montalbano star Luca Zingaretti directing. ...

And from the wikipedia page looks like they have created the scripts from short stories published some time ago.

Shame they didn’t kill off Catarella whilst they were at it...

stumbledin · 07/10/2020 17:01

I misremembered about the final book:

... "I finished him off five years ago. That's to say, the final novel in the series of Montalbano is already written and deposited at the publishing house. When I get fed up with him or am not able to write any more, I'll tell the publisher: publish that book. Sherlock Holmes was recovered …" – with his cigarette-free hand, he mimes the detective being pulled from the water – "but it will not be possible to recover Montalbano. In that last book, he's really finished." ..

So presumably the tv company dont want to make that into a tv programme!

FairFriday · 07/10/2020 17:03

Oh see I thought he might have killed him off because he didn’t want it published until after his own death.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 07/10/2020 17:30

I had hoped there would be a rich store of Young Montalbano but it doesn't look like it.
Agree Catarella can be a royal pain.

stumbledin · 11/10/2020 19:50

Did anyone watch this last night?

I did and was reminded why I had stopped watching.

So sloooooooooooooooow.

But lovely scenery and totally empty streets. Is is filmed very early in the mornings - looking at the angle of the sun.

sproutsandparsnips · 11/10/2020 20:48

Ooh I will give this a go and see.
I love it for the atmosphere. I've read all the books and love them. The problem is I have the concentration span of a gnat and I have to concentrate to read the subtitles as my Italian is not good enough.

Wingedharpy · 11/10/2020 21:27

I've really tried with Montalbano (DH loves it) but I just cannot be doing with it.
I hate the "comedy" aspect of it.
I like my murders dark and creepy (though not necessarily a full on gore fest) and I want my Detectives to take it seriously and do some work, not just sit in an office signing papers.
Even DH was dozing off last night......then we watched The Bridge....that's how it should be done.
