Starts tonight 10pm on Ch4. Its a British drama about the porn industry. Good cast. I've seen the trailer and it looks promising so thought I would share. Smile

I thought it was very good. But I didn't come to it thinking it would be a comedy.

The actors were all very good indeed, especially Rupert Everett and Hayley Squires.

TweeterandtheMonkeyman · 08/10/2020 20:16

Gosh I didn’t see the trailer so can’t comment on that but if you wanted a light hearted look at the porn industry Hmm then this definitely wasn’t for you .
I see the Daily Mail have picked this up now.
I thought it was excellent- a very tough watch at times.

NeedToKnow101 · 09/10/2020 23:28

I'm on episode 4? It's brilliant; so dark and sad, brilliant dialogue. I found the first episode so disturbing I wasn't going to watch any more, but I'm glad I did.

MsStillwell · 10/10/2020 10:15

I didn't really get it.

SPOILER ALERT!

How did Hayley suddenly get over her complete fear of Tom?
Was her doing an anal scene meant to be empowering for her? If so how?
Was the issue of non-consensual no condom use ever clarified?

mrscampbellblackagain · 10/10/2020 12:17

I don't think she did get over her fear of Tom but she knew it was the only way to make £££ and keep her house.

NeedToKnow101 · 10/10/2020 12:35

I thought Hayley didn't do anal and didn't get over her fear of Tom. He lived in the US so she could avoid him.

MsStillwell · 10/10/2020 14:32

I thought Hayley didn't do anal and didn't get over her fear of Tom. He lived in the US so she could avoid him.

Was it not a "Jolene loses her virginity to Tom Pain" video? One minute she says she won't ever do anal sex and is completely petrified of Tom Pain, the next she's having anal sex with Tom Pain and we're supposed to believe it's some kind of empowerment?

(God, I can't believe I'm discussing "doing anal porn videos" as if I know the first thing about it Hmm ).

NeedToKnow101 · 10/10/2020 15:38

It was the new girl who had apparently first time anal sex, not with Tom whateverhisnane is, with an anonymous porn actor. (I suspect it wasn't the first time - not watched them all yet)
Tom first turned up at the porn baron's party in the morning when everyone else was asleep and tried to rape the same new girl. She stabbed him.
Later she visited him in hospital to say sorry for stabbing him, wanked him off (as you do), then started a relationship with him.
(Years earlier Tom attacked Hayley when she went to 'break' the US - that's why she's scared of him).

I'm finding it shocking and sad, sometimes funny, but really watchable.

NeedToKnow101 · 10/10/2020 15:39

I'm really crap with names btw.

mrscampbellblackagain · 10/10/2020 16:13

I don't think that it was about empowerment - it was just she needed the cash to pay her legal fees and wasn't prepared to lose her house. She chose her female friend as a director but clearly it was awful for her - they showed the shot of her face streaked with make up and tears.

NeedToKnow101 · 10/10/2020 17:30

Ah just realised I am writing after only seeing two episodes.. so Hayley goes with Tom later on...

MsStillwell · 10/10/2020 17:33

NeedToKnow so a) why is Hayley not scared of him in the final episode and b) does a porn video with him?

NeedToKnow101 · 10/10/2020 17:49

@MsStillwell - I'll let you know once I've watched it Grin

MsStillwell · 10/10/2020 17:52

Sorry! I thought from your replies that you had watched it and was 'arguing' with my interpretation of the final episode. Look forward to your thoughts (and hopefully explaining it all to me!).

Elieza · 10/10/2020 17:53

I’ve only watched one episode but as others have said it’s not a comedy. It’s dark. Actually made me quite sad as it reminded me of stuff from my youth (not porn acting but the sleeping girl being ‘woken up’ by her bf having sex with her without consent or even a condom. Been there, had that done, thought the room was moving due to an earthquake until I realised what it was. He used the same phrase as that actor did, something about me being just to beautiful he couldn’t help himself. Aye fuck off dick).

The programme was not what I thought and I don’t know if I will watch again. Need cheering up not depressing down Grin

Yeah sorry I caused some confusion because I thought you were actually talking about new girl. Will come back when I've actually watched it all! Grin
NeedToKnow101 · 10/10/2020 17:58

I don't think she did get over her fear of Tom but she knew it was the only way to make £££ and keep her house.

^^ I imagine this is the answer..

MsStillwell · 10/10/2020 18:12

I imagine this is the answer..

Surely that can't be the message. You know how some of us have been raped? And how we have boundaries about sex? Well, it doesn't really matter because women are second class humans and men have all the power and Hey! Isn't porn great?

NeedToKnow101 · 10/10/2020 18:35

I don't think porn is great at all. Don't watch it. Don't like it. Don't like what it does to vulnerable abused women and girls, or to men and boys who watch it.

From what I have seen so far of this programme, it doesn't celebrate porn at all, and shows how messed up Hayley and everyone involved in it is, and how it has impacted on all of her family negatively.

MsStillwell · 10/10/2020 19:31

I wasn't suggesting that was your message. I'm suggesting that that might be the message of the programme, and am struggling to believe it.

I definitely don't think the message of the programme is that porn is great. When Hayley talks about how she got into porn, and then how harrowing she found it - well I felt it was very anti porn.

MsStillwell · 11/10/2020 13:32

What did you make of the final episode and Hayley’s actions? It’s all very well being a woman with principles but you’ll do anything to fund your lifestyle?

mrscampbellblackagain · 11/10/2020 17:40

I think having a home for her children was just so important to her that she would do anything to keep it. She tried to act on her principles and it didn't work out did it?

It did raise a lot of questions for sure.

NeedToKnow101 · 11/10/2020 18:03

Just watched the last episode. She didn't want to lose her and her kids home, and this was the only way she felt she could do it. Also; in her mind she was kind of negating his previous attack on her by taking control of the situation; shoot, story, crew, location etc.

Then after that she carried on being in control as she saw it, writing and performing in her own stuff, 'for Guardian readers that like to wank.'

It continued to show that abuse and porn aren't detached from each other, and Amy's story was horrific. I found it really sad and moving.
